No word yet on what exactly Project Ring is. SEGA plans on revealing more details on the 24th.

“A small minority [of published Activision games] consist of a select few wholly-owned and internally-developed new IP for which we have planned conservatively. If successful, [these] will prove [to have] a high rate of return on investment for the near and long-term. …rigorous, measured approach to launching new IP… the introduction of new IP is one of our industry’s most difficult challenges. [We will] conservatively manage our portfolio risk profile by generating our majority of revenue… from more predictable and stable franchises that have served us well over long periods of time.” – Activision CEO, Bobby Kotick

According to the company’s conference call from earlier today, that just isn’t happening. Activision has announced that Guitar Hero: Greatest Hits is on the way. This game will feature full-band versions of tracks that appeared in previous Guitar Hero games. That title is set to come out this Summer.

Activision revealed in a conference call last night that Guitar Hero: Greatest Hits is in development. Songs from previous Guitar Hero titles will be in the game. Though, Greatest Hits isn’t the biggest news. Activision is also creating another title for the Guitar Hero series. The next “true” title will see a “major re-stage” of the franchise as we know it with “new differentiated Guitar Hero products.” The game should be on the way before the year ends.

Rumored track list after the break.

The Official Nintendo Magazine has notified its readers that the next issue will release slightly behind schedule. The delay comes from what the magazine describes as “great exclusive content.” The word on the street is that the magazine could have scored something big for its latest issue, but that remains to be seen. I suppose we’ll find out what this exclusive content is in a few short weeks.

The full email body can be read below:

“This is a courtesy email just to let you know that you will be receiving your next issue of Official Nintendo Magazine on or around the 14th February. The delay is due to some great exclusive content that has resulted in us having to send out your subscription copy slightly later than planned.”

A few weeks ago, rumors surfaced that Mario & Sonic were heading back to the Olympics for a Winter edition. While SEGA is still offering the “no comment” response when asked about the game, director of licensing, Dennis Kim confirmed that a sequel is in the works.

Kim says that is is unsure which sports will be playable, but he is hoping that the sequel will sell as well as the original.

“Last year, 2008, they had a very successful game using Mario and Sonic at the Beijing Games, as well as a multi-sport simulation type of game. That’s what’s being discussed and planned for Vancouver. We are feeling optimistic about sales because of the Beijing experience.” The Province reports that “Sega will also produce a simulation game with more realistic portrayals of athletes and venues.”

“As for Nintendo Power magazine, it has contributed greatly so far in selling NES and SNES, which Nintendo had to start from scratch in the U.S. Back then, publishing and distributing a monthly magazine was the most practical way to connect consumers and manufacturers. Now we have a much higher frequency of connecting with consumers online than traditional print publications. Online also has an advantage with lower cost and speed. As so many media are shifting from print to online, we also wanted to shift how we primarily connect with our consumers, and going from our paper publication, Nintendo Power, to online as the center of our message delivery efforts to our consumers. Part of the team that moved to New York included Nintendo’s web content team, and they are working with an increased number of staff.” – Satoru Iwata

If there’s one thing that most Sonic fans can agree upon, it’s that creating a completely 2D Sonic might be best for the direction of the series. Tetsu Katano, who has been busy directing Sonic and the Black Knight, recently spoke about a 2D Sonic game. When asked if a pure 2D Sonic experience is being made in a video interview, Katano said, “Obviously we do like to target the core users of Sonic games, but it’s still under discussion so I can’t say a lot about it.” Though Katano was unwilling to confirm anything outright, fans of Sonic who believe the series should be left in 2D can hold on to the words that a pure 2D game is “under discussion.”

Meanwhile, Yuji Naka also spoke in the same interview and provided a few tidbits: More “Let’s” games might be created depending on the sales of Let’s Tap, Prope is looking into the functionality of Wii MotionPlus, and that the company is open to developing games with new types of characters.
