This information comes from an Investor Q&A with Satoru Iwata. Some of the more important details have been paraphrased.

– ‘we scaled back because it’s how things look now and we want to reflect accurately so as to not defraud investors or shock the market at the end of the financial year’

– ‘Our relationships with 3rd parties are improving, and you’ll see results in the medium-term’

– ‘Wii was scaled back because the hardware bump was less than expected for year end in Japan. We’re going to try hard to impress the market better this year. Wii Music wasn’t a mistake but we had many communications issues, which have better prepared us for the future. We’re always going to try new propositions, and we’ll try hard to make another one like the launch of Wii, brain training, and animal crossing DS’.

– ‘Obviously with the current state of the exchange rates, there is no chance we can release DSi for the same cost as current DS Lite in foreign countries. We’re doing customer research before announcing’.

– ‘Not adjusting manufacture of wiis down and no huge stockpile. they were all shipped abroad’

– ‘Wii system update, featuring for example the SD Card fix, is coming in Spring as suggested at the conference last year.’

With the sales of the DS/DSi, one might think that the portable is here to stay for quite awhile. However, Apple’s Greg Joswiak has a completely opposite opinion. Joswiak commented on the DS, noting analysts have told him that “the DS is the past of gaming devices and that the iPod Touch is the future of gaming devices.”

“Well, it’s not just the screen quality – it’s the graphics capability, the compute power, the App distribution model. I had an analyst tell me in September – and he was so right – that the DS is the past of gaming devices, and that the iPod Touch is the future of gaming devices. It certainly has our competitors scrambling in what they’re going to do in reaction to this. I think it’s a tremendous start that we’re having at entering this gaming market, and there’s no doubt that that’s happening – it just is.”

“2009 will see the release of the studio’s [Action Pants] first title, a sports game developed exclusively for Wii. This new intellectual property will expand upon Ubisoft’s recent success in the sports genre with the Shaun White Snowboarding franchise.” – Ubisoft press release

Shaun White Snowboarding was released on the Wii, so the company does have experience with creating sports games. The question is, what type of sports game is Action Pants developing?

SEGA of America, Inc. and SEGA Europe Ltd. have today announced Let’s Tap, a game that is blazing new ground in Nintendo Wii control design. Developed by Prope, the studio that Sonic the Hedgehog creator Yuji Naka established in 2006, Let’s Tap is the first product from the new studio to be released to in North America and Europe. Developed exclusively for Nintendo’s Wii system, Let’s Tap utilizes a ground-breaking control scheme where the Wii controller is placed on a box or flat surface so that the controller can detect minute vibrations. Players of all ages and skill levels then tap the box or flat surface to interact with the game; there’s no need to hold the controller. Let’s Tap is slated for a summer 2009 ship for the Nintendo Wii in North America and Europe.

“Let’s Tap offers a new and innovative way of playing on the Wii which only a videogame legend such as Naka-san could have ever possibly imagined” Commented Gary Knight, European Marketing Director SEGA Europe. “It’s such a simple yet genius concept and still easy to pick up and play, everyone will be tapping away before you know it!”

It’s unclear which platform the screenshots are from but I think it’s safe to say that this isn’t the DS version.

Koch Media, a leading producer and distributor of digital entertainment products, and history specialist Slitherine, a UK-based independent developer and publisher, today announced the release of the new title MILITARY HISTORY™ Commander Europe at War for Nintendo DS™, PSP™ and a PC version with new and enhanced features. This is the first release in a new series of games.

And thanks to the clearly arranged, easy-to-use user interface, players will actually spend their time fighting the enemy, rather than struggling with the menus.
