Nintendo Switch 2 game-key cards

Physical games are still happening on Nintendo Switch 2, but something new is being thrown into the mix with what is being called game-key cards.

Nintendo says that these are a new cartridge type that don’t have data. In order to play them, you will need to download the game from the Internet like a digital version. The cartridge will still be needed to play. It goes without saying, but you’ll need enough space available for that download.

Nintendo Switch 2 name

Nintendo has opened up on the name for Switch 2 and revealed that it considered various other possibilities, including Super Nintendo Switch.

While Nintendo Switch 2 is straightforward, it apparently wasn’t an easy decision for the team. The company’s Kouichi Kawamoto noted that “we really struggled” to find the best name for the hardware.

Super Nintendo Switch would have used the same path as the NES to the SNES. However, Kawamoto said that it “didn’t feel right.”

Here’s the full exchange with Kawamoto as well as Takuhiro Dohta and Tetsuya Sasaki:

It’s a small image, but we have a first at the Nintendo Switch 2 home menu.

Those that own the current Nintendo Switch will find that the UI looks extremely similar here. It again looks like games will be rolled out in a row, with your most recent one played in the first slot. There are also buttons for the Nintendo Switch Online app, settings, photos / videos section, and more.

The first game price for Nintendo Switch 2 is in, and it turns out that Mario Kart World will cost $80.

This is by far the most amount for a title in the industry thus far. Even across other consoles, the standard had started to become $70. Most of Nintendo’s Switch 1 games were priced at $60, though Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom was at $70.
