Wii U eShop

Can this “12-bit” platformer still stack up now that it’s in HD?

System: Nintendo Wii U
Release Date: June 13th, 2013
Developer: Renegade Kid
Publisher: Renegade Kid

Author: Austin

There was something exceptionally captivating about Mutant Mudds when it released on 3DS back in January of 2012. I think, for me, the combination of slower-paced platforming and old school difficulty that Renegade Kid created scratched an itch that few games do, so naturally I was quite pleased upon hearing the announcement of an HD re-release for Max and his muddy rivals on Wii U.

It has been a long and arduous wait (the game was meant to hit Wii U much closer to launch after all), but I’ve finally got my hands on all 80 levels of Mutant Mudds Deluxe and I must report: It’s every bit as good as you’d think.

Mighty Switch Force! 2 could make its way to the Wii U much like its predecessor.

Speaking with Nintendo Force this month, WayForward’s Matt Bozon said that the studio will “certainly look into it.” But don’t expect a Wii U version immediately – “it would have to be at a later date”, according to Bozon.

“For now, Shantae is taking the front seat. If we did MSF2 in HD, it would have to be at a later date. However many fans have been asking us to consider deploying the pixel-based 3DS game to Wii U. That’s possible, so we’ll certainly look into it.”

Mighty Switch Force! originally started out as a 3DS eShop game. Nearly a year later, WayForward ended up bringing an HD version to Wii U in time for the console’s launch.

A Hat in Time’s developer has been pushing to get its game on the Wii U. As far as the specifics go, creator Jonas Kaerlev and his studio Gears for Breakfast needs to obtain a license to port the game over, as it’s made in Unreal.

Gears for Breakfast is currently in talks with Epic Games to work out a deal. Additionally, Kaerlev confirmed to Polygon that the team is talking with a separate publisher about using their license in exchange for a “cut of the cake.” Gears for Breakfast has also been in touch with Nintendo so that it can become a licensed publisher on Wii U.

I made my way through the first twenty levels in the upcoming Mutant Mudds Deluxe, which means the ghost levels were unlocked. I figured I’d catch some footage of it for you guys, and even though it didn’t really go as smoothly as I had hoped, you can probably glean something from it. I also give my general impressions of the game as we go along, if you’re curious how it stacks up.

A couple of month’s ago, QUBE’s developer showed an image of the game running on Wii U. This month’s ONM officially confirms QUBE: Director’s Cut for the Wii U eShop.

Director Dan Da Rocha said that the team is “revamping the game for the Wii U, bringing in an all-new story, an entirely new music composition, new puzzles and a time trial mode with 10 maps.”

QUBE: Director’s Cut is estimated to launch this fall.
