Wii U eShop

Indies have become a prominent force in the gaming industry, especially over the past few months. On Nintendo’s end, the company is recognizing smaller developers more than ever on Wii U and 3DS.

Speaking with IGN, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime discussed how working with indies is a big priority for Nintendo:

“The independent developer, especially those developers who have experience, who’ve shown real capabilities, we love those independent developers. And what we’re doing is creating even more of an infrastructure for a brand-new independent developer, someone who’s never created content before, to be effective on our platform. So it’s an area that we’re spending a lot more time and a lot more energy to create the infrastructure to help these developers publish their content and be effective. It’s something that we have had to learn how to do. Because our systems aren’t straightforward for a developer who hasn’t had a lot of experience.”

Witch Beam’s Assault Android Cactus has been confirmed for Wii U. The studio’s bullet hell shooter will be available on Wii U in Q1 2014 in addition to the PlayStation 4 and PS Vita.

Assault Android Cactus will include boss fights, dynamic music and stages, four different characters with unique play styles, and four-player local co-op.

Just in case you had any doubts, The Legend of Zelda will in fact be available on the North American Wii U Virtual Console tomorrow. It’s also scheduled to arrive on the European service in a few hours. That makes Zelda a worldwide release, with Japan also receiving the game yesterday.

Tengami will be hitting Wii U in Q1 2014. An exact date hasn’t been confirmed, but Nyamyam’s Phil Tossell told Nintendo Life that “it could be a few weeks after the iOS edition or a couple of months, but certainly no more than three months.”

“The iOS version will definitely be out Q4 this year. Wii U will be Q1 2014 — it could be a few weeks after the iOS edition or a couple of months, but certainly no more than three months.”

As far as differences between the two versions are concerned, Nyamyam believes that the Wii U version could end up being “even better” with new features that could make it into the game including alternative control schemes as well as “better ways of interacting.” The team has already considered implementing the Wiimote as an option.

“We have the Wii U version running in parity with the iOS version in terms of features, but we may be able to add stuff that makes it even better — such as alternative control schemes and better ways of interacting. We’ve considered using the Wii Remote for control, but we’ll have to see.”
