Miyamoto says Dr. Mario shouldn’t be trusted
In the words of Shigeru Miyamoto, Dr. Mario is a character that shouldn’t be trusted.
IGN recently spoke with the Mario creator as part of an interview for The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Miyamoto talked about how the film brought out a new side of the character as an everyman hero. However, when it comes to Dr. Mario, he’s a character shrouded in shadiness.
Miyamoto told the site:
“Mario’s a blue-collar, he’s a regular person. So, even when he becomes Dr. Mario, there’s a sort of, like, shadiness, like ‘can I trust this person?; That remained [in the film]. And I think that’s the kind of image that’s carried down for generations as Mario. And to see that image kind of coincide, and then evolve into something of a hero is something that I’m really happy to see.”
Mario has been in many different types of roles and games over the years. Dr. Mario has been around for a few decades having debuted in 1990. The series most recently had a stint on mobile with Dr. Mario World, but it ended service towards the end of 2021.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie is in theaters now.
