Rumor: Dragon Quest creator says Chrono Trigger remake is happening [update: false]
Original: A remake of Chrono Trigger is apparently in the works. That information comes from Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii, who allegedly shared the information at Comicon in Naples, Italy.
We do have confirmation that Horii was present for the event and was on hand delivering some sort of talk, based on various attendee reports. Regarding Chrono Trigger, he apparently let that information slip during an interview. After the host whispered something in his ear, Horii covered his mouth – indicating that he said something he wasn’t supposed to.
Chrono Trigger is one of the most acclaimed RPGs of all time. The game originally launched on the SNES in 1995 and is still beloved today.
Chrono Trigger has seen a few re-releases over the years, including on Nintendo DS. There were a number of additions and improvements for that version, including an updated translation, a dual-screen mode, a self-completing map screen, a default run option. a monster-battling Arena, the Lost Sanctum and Dimensional Vortex areas, and a new ending that provides a nod to Chrono Cross.
Assuming the Chrono Trigger remake rumor is true, there’s no information about it currently. Whether or not Square Enix would be using its now famous HD-2D style is unclear.
Thanks to Reddit for today’s report.
Update: While Horrii was in attendance at the event, it appears his words were misinterpreted / mistranslated (funnily enough, by his own translator), so a Chrono Trigger remake is not confirmed. The latest update is based directly on footage from his appearance at Comicon.
Thanks to Brian for the tip.
