Original (4/18): Sonic Origins had originally been announced last year as an HD compilation of past Sonic games, set to launch in 2022. However, Sega has been very quiet about the project since, leading to speculation of development issues, if not outright cancellation. It seems now that that may not be the case.
A recent Korean rating for the PC version game has just surfaced, giving it a “suitable for all ages” rating. Most importantly, this means a release of Sonic Origins is still in the cards, and could possibly happen sooner rather than later.
While this is a rating for the PC version of the game, Sonic Origins was initially announced for release on all “latest platforms”, which would naturally include the Switch. Unless Sega’s plans have changed drastically since, it’s safe to assume that the collection will make its way to multiple platforms and not be tied solely to PC.
As a reminder, Sonic Origins is a compilation of Sonic 1, Sonic 2, Sonic 3 & Knuckles and Sonic CD, which aims to modernize these games for current systems. While several new features have been promised, only an optimized 16:9 aspect ratio for the compilation has been revealed so far. If you’d like to learn more, the head of Sonic Team, Takashi Iizuka, talked a little bit about the project in an interview, which you can catch up on here.
Update: New art has also been spotted on PlayStation’s servers, posted below.
Update 2 (4/19): Sonic Origins has now been rated in Australia as well.
