Shadow Labyrinth

Shadow Labyrinth review

System: Switch 2 (also on Switch)
Release date: July 17, 2025
Developer: Bandai Namco
Publisher: Bandai Namco

I wish I could have been a fly on the wall during the pitch meeting for Shadow Labyrinth. Of all the ways Bandai Namco could have commemorated the 45th anniversary of Pac-Man, the idea the company landed on was to release an exploration-driven action-platformer set on a sprawling sci-fi planet. Not only that, but Bandai Namco greenlit, developed, and released a game in which the player is accompanied by a dark (possibly evil?) take on Pac-Man named Puck, who devours the souls of slain enemies to help the player level up. It’s a bonkers concept for a spin-off, and one I knew I needed to experience for myself to fully understand.

Shadow Labyrinth trailer

Bandai Namco released a launch trailer for Shadow Labyrinth, its new take on Pac-Man. This time around, the company has produced a Metroidvania game.

For those that need a refresher, check out the following overview:

Another free Nintendo Switch to Switch 2 upgrade is now confirmed, as Bandai Namco confirmed that this will be in place for Shadow Labyrinth.

The game, a new take on Pac-Man which was first see in the show Secret Level, will have a frame rate of 60 FPS. Resolution comes in at 4K when docked – it’s a native 1080p in handheld mode. To compare, Shadow Labyrinth is 1080p docked and 720p portable on the previous Nintendo Switch.

Shadow Labyrinth release date

Bandai Namco just shared the release date for Shadow Labyrinth. The game launches on July 18, 2025.

Shadow Labyrinth was originally revealed at The Game Awards 2024 in December. Today’s update gives a look at never-before-seen gameplay including the first glimpse of a powerful mode players unlock as they progress through the game, where they take on the form of a massive robotic mech called Gaia. This inflicts heavy damage to enemies and levels the playing field for battles with some of the game’s most epically huge bosses. The game also features the quick and agile Swordsman No.8 melee combat and Mini Puck mode that lets players ride rails and explore small areas in classic Pac-Man style.

Shadow Labyrinth special edition secret

The just-revealed Shadow Labyrinth is now confirmed to be getting a special edition, and pre-orders are open for both versions of the game.

Shadow Labyrinth was one of the more unexpected announcements from The Game Awards 2024 last night. Bandai Namco is taking Pac-Man in a pretty different direction with a 2D platformer and darker tone as seen in Secret Level, Prime Video’s adult-animated anthology series.

Shadow Labyrinth

At The Game Awards a few moments ago, Bandai Namco announced Shadow Labyrinth. This new take on Pac-Man launches for Nintendo Switch in 2025.

Shadow Labyrinth is a 2D action platformer. For those that have watched the Secret Level animated short, this project is looking to replicate that style.

Bandai Namco has shared the following details thus far:
