    ps4 is a beast

    • TDude73

…in second place. The Nintendo Switch remains on top this week.

      • Roto Prime

        3DS in 2nd place… no?

        • Stuart

          Ps4 + Ps4 Pro = 42.462
          3DS combined = 45.730

          • Roto Prime

I thought my math was off, this is good <3

      • Gregory Weagle

Yeah; and it was the only system to increase sales from last week.

    • Eagle367

You meant to say switch right?

Nintendo DOMINATING the charts as always.

I figured the PS4 sales would go straight down after a few weeks of DQXI was out.

AS ALWAYS? where you under a rock the last 5 years?

You do know Nintendo owns the 3DS as well, right?

Yes! and it still have been losing against Playstation!

so, I ask again, have you been under a rock the last 5 years?

          • WTFISTHISSHIT?

3DS hasn’t been losing to the Playstation in Japan since the last 5 years.

Oooohhhhh! You were limiting your comment to just Japan….O.K. then, sure, you can have Japan. Sorry then.

          • WTFISTHISSHIT?

I thought my comment directing it to only Japan was obvious, I suppose not. I already knew Nintendo was losing ground on a global scale.

          • GoldenTriforce

I mean this is a Japanese sales chart lol

Wii U certainly never dominated in Japan though

  • Exposer

    Why the boost?

  • Man

Dang. That sudden sales boost on Switch

    • Jaxad0127

      Sudden supply availability.

  • awng782

Excellent pre-Obon Switch sales. The Switch came close to outselling both PS4 and the 3DS family combined.

    • Gregory Weagle

So; what do you predict for the next two weeks for Switch and the upcoming Monster Hunter XX? My predictions are for next week for Switch to sell around 60,000-80,000; and the week after 80,000-100,000 with Monster Hunter XX doing around 500,000.

      • awng782

        90,000 this week (Obon)
110,000 the next week (MHXX + bundle)

150,000 debut for MHXX. I don’t think an HD port of a 3DS game, which itself was an expanded version of 2015 MHX, will sell 500,000+ at launch.

        • Busterblade

          Even if it’s Monster Hunter?

          • awng782

I’m basing this off preliminary preorder numbers that I have seen from some Japanese retailers. I’d love to be proven wrong. The limited edition MHXX Switch bundle should help, but I dont know how many units Nintendo will ship.

          • Stuart

On one hand,XX is doing pretty bad on Comg, but is pretty high on Amazon the last weeks. I think it could crack the 200k. I ‘ll be surprised if it does more.

        • GoldenTriforce

I was under the assumption that the MHXX system was only on capcoms store but I just found out recently that it’s available at other stores, which is pretty good news.

          • awng782

So the MHXX Switch bundle won’t be super limited then. That’s good.

Still, I don’t expect MHXX to sell that well. It won’t bomb, but it won’t be a million or even a 500,000+ seller on the Switch unless it is localized for western audience **hint hint nudge nudge Capcom**

  • Roto Prime

Come on The Snack World, EXPLODE PLEASE!!!!!!!

  • Locky Mavo

Great Switch sales, but they don’t make much sense. Because of Splatoon 2? Most likely, I guess, but could you imagine if Nintendo could meet demand and DQ11 for Switch released along side the 3DS and PS4 versions?

    • StuOhQ

That would have been truly insane.

    • ronin4life

Switch is hard to get, so loads of people want it but have to wait until stock is available. Plus Monhun is getting closer and closer so there may have been people waiting on that too pulling the trigger now.

  • Stuart

Holy fish-on-a-stick, Switch is a monster!

    • Stuart

…and as I was saying last week, Splatoon 2 == Switch hardware sales. Confirming that the only thing that not allow the game’s sales to be higher is not having more install base right now. The game will keep selling as Switch itself keeps selling.

      • Aline Piroutek

Thanks to the stock shortage, Switch couldn’t break historical sales records.

        • Gregory Weagle

Yeah; but those demand numbers might be in trouble.

  • Francesco Gentile

    Wow at those Switch sales!

  • Tlozbj

So going by this week and the past, Nintendo is probably planning on shipping between 400k – 500k Switch to Japan in the month of August

  • carlos holguin holguin

wow great sales.. and i expect even more sales next week with monster hunter

    • Roto Prime

      NEXT WEEK IS MOHUN?!!!!?!

        August 25, 2017 = Japan release.

        • Roto Prime

          Why is madness…..RIP Japan!!!!!

    • Aline Piroutek

Well, not so much. The stock is non-existent. I expect the usual 100 000 units.

So you calmed down and actually trying to be cool . How nice of you

    • Gregory Weagle

Ah; I see the Quddish World Tournament has ended for the year. ;-]

    • TDude73

      Bloody h*ll! You’re alive!!!

  • AJK

Monster Hunter and Mario Odyssey yet to come as well. If Nintendo can keep getting stock out the Switch is going to kill it this holiday season!

    • Aline Piroutek

If the shortage keeps going on, the Switch will sell a lot forever. In Japan at least.

      • Gabriel

  • StuOhQ

The Switch now has >100k lead on the 3DS with launches combined. Also worth noting is five straight weeks that the Switch has beat Wii U + 3DS combined for the same time period (launches aligned). Next week marks the start of 3DSs price cut. It will be hard for the Switch not to lose a little ground the next two weeks.

  • Radish

Looks like DQ11 is the only thing keeping PS4 alive in Japan at this point. Switch is the future and despite huge sales numbers thousands of people keep lining up for the chance to buy one.

Japanese hardware sales as of 8/13/2017 according to Media Create:

    New 3DS (released 10.11.2014): 5,412,901
    PS Vita (released 12.17.2011): 5,318,355
    PS4 (released 02.22.2014): 5,112,916*
    Wii U (released 12.08.2012): 3,234,701
    SWITCH (released 03.03.2017): 1,412,507
    2DS (released 02.27.2016): 441,569
    New 2DS LL (released 07.13.2017): 230,053
    *includes Pro sales

I’ve gotten a lot of responses over the years, and some of them very critical. So I would like to clear a few things up:

First, the reason I don’t list sales of the original 3DS models is because I simply don’t know what the numbers are. And to find out, I would have to spend many hours sifting through countless archived Media Create articles, and I just don’t have the time to do that. But know that all models combined, the 3DS is around 23 million in Japan.

Second, when the PS4 Pro model was released, I was going to count it’s sales seperately. But then I caught myself accidentally combining both PS4 and PS4 Pro sales together. But instead of going back to the beginning and recounting all the numbers, I simply added an asterisk to let people know that the PS4 numbers include the Pro model sales, too.

Third, I realize that other sites may have slightly different numbers than mine. I don’t know whether they get their sales data from Media Create, Famitsu, or from combining both. All I can say is that I’ve been listing weekly Media Create sales for years now, and all I’ve been doing is simply adding the numbers that I’ve seen. But no one has 100% accuracy on hardware sales, both Media Create and Famitsu are within a margin of error.

The reason why I started this list was to simply give people an idea as to how current systems are stacking up against each other. It is not meant to be read as an infallible declaration of exact Japanese sales.

Last of all, I would like to thank all of the kind people who have liked my posts and sent me kind comments. Thank you so much, you guys are awesome.

    • Gregory Weagle

I didn’t mind your numbers all that much, and personally I don’t mind if the 3DS sales aren’t combined simply because we are dealing with the last six years or so.

    • Indielink

      You da best man.

      You are awesome!

  • Wanderlei

The Switch holds is sales boost well. PS4 drops back quite fast.

    • awng782

DQXI’s launch was always going to be a big but temporary boost for PS4 (and to a lesser extent, 3DS) sales.
