ARMS and Zelda still fighting to remain in the list.

    • Exposer

No, ARMS is fighting, Zelda is surviving.

      • maybe Zelda can even climb? πŸ˜‰

  • Exposer

Samus needed your help and you treat her like that, shame on you Japan.

    • Fredy Rodriguez Ortega

it is actually pretty good for a Metroid game in japan, they don’t like her πŸ™

    • Advance*

We either needed the game before the Switch came out, or for the game to be on Switch.

      • Exposer

Switxh needs to install on the market first, 3DS has alrrady 65 M units out there.

    • Gilmar Venancio

Japan was never good for Metroid, dont expect any change.

    • TheOnceAndFutureKing

Metroid always did crap in Japan.

  • carlos holguin holguin

i hope it sells at least in the first week 500 k

  • Simtopia23

As usual Japan don’t give a f.. of Metroid, especially when it’s made on the west.

    • Ragnell

      Wonder why.

Too hard for them and not anime enough? Not enough cute stuff in it? Id like to know

      • GoldenTriforce

I thought Japan liked hard games but Americans were the wimps, at least according to 1980s logic

        • Ragnell

Me too. Im sure theres a video out there on it

          • GoldenTriforce

This may sound crazy, but Japan doesn’t solely like cute stuff. There are a lot of potential reasons why metroid is not popular there,

  • Ragnell

I lost 21% battery life trying to comment on this site with my phone. Why does it freeze up? And thanks for supporting metroid japan…

  • Stuart

Could this finally be the baseline for Switch in Japan (between 40k and 50k)?

Monster Hunter is holding actually pretty well for the disapointing launch it had.

Surprised Samus Returns doing this all, in Japan. Obviously not moe, boobtastic, and female protagonist in a Shooter game won’t appeal to them. AND YAY ARMS IS STILL ALIVE AND KICKING!

If MHXX sells like this until January (plus holiday sales) I’ll be happy

Nothing here shocks me, metroid has never been a seller in Japan.

    • Since World is releasing in January, I could see a little drop-off of sales in December, but maybe it’ll be proportionate to the holiday boost?

But yeah, same, especially with Metroid.

      • GoldenTriforce

Plus I see a Switch Monster Hunter being announced early next year,

        • Same. I’m sure they’ll let World roll out and probably wait until Spring to announce one.

  • YamiryuuZero

Samus Returns selling 30k units on launch in Japan! Not bad for a Metroid game over there!

    • You would like join our discord server Yamiryuu We’re a great community of Nintendo gamers, I feel you will make a great contribution to our community, the link is in my profile if you are interested

I don’t use discord, or any social media for more than 5 seconds a day (if I ever remember I have an account on those).

But thanks for the invitation anyways.

Metroid 2 Return of Samus on Gameboy sold just over 100,000 copies, so Samus Returns sold comparably well.

  • SetzerGabbiani

People are buying Monster Hunter as a solid third option as they pick up a Switch it seems. The only games selling better on the system are Mario Kart and Splatoon 2. It will track well with first party games at least until World releases, and maybe after since it’s portable.

I’m not shocked Metroid sold as many as it did given the massive install base. Still better than recent efforts.

  • awng782

First week sales/LTD sales of previous Metroid games:
    Metroid [FC]: ??? / 1.040.000
Metroid II: Return of Samus [GB] – ??? / 102.550
    Super Metroid [SFC] – ??? / 508.698
    Metroid Fusion [GBA] – 49.680 / 155.528
    Metroid Prime [GCN] – 39.829 / 78.384
    Metroid: Zero Mission [GBA] – 39.112 / 85.045
    Famicom Mini 23: Metroid [GBA] – 14.900 / 50.353
    Metroid Prime 2: Echoes [GCN] – 17.680 / 40.355
    Metroid Prime: Hunters [NDS] – 32.613 / 90.028
    Metroid Prime 3: Corruption [WII] – 34.151 / 74.647
    Metroid: Other M [WII] – 44.103 / 75.578
    Metroid Prime: Federation Force [3DS] – 4.286 / 6.090
    Metroid: Samus Returns [3DS] – 30,855

Metroid hasn’t been a big franchise in over 2 decades. I was surprised myself to find that Metroid and Super Metroid sold that much (1 million and 500,000+ respectively).

BTW even with Metroid being niche in Japan, Federation Force was an unmitigated disaster.

    • GoldenTriforce

Could have a lot to do with the sprites not using as realistic an art style as the more modern games. The sprite games out sold most of the others in the series. Realistic art styles are normally less popular in Japan.

      • awng782

Ehhh…I’m not sure the increasing realism is what has caused franchise to go from a 1 million seller with the first game, to a 500K seller with Super Metroid, to <150K sellers with all other entries. That's quite a drop-off, one that a simple "Japan doesn't like realism" reason probably can't explain.

Either way, this discussion is pointless. All Metroid games outside of the first Metroid and Super Metroid saw 85-95% of its sales come from the west, so we will need to see some preliminary western sales figures (if there are any provided to begin with) in order to determine how healthy this franchise actually is.

        • GoldenTriforce

Oh the game will do fine in the west.

Changing tastes in Japan as well as being on systems with lower install bases (3DS has a high install base but it is very late in the hardware’s life cycle and Japanese sales are down) could also have a lot to do with the drop off.

    • You forget Metroid Pinball in your list.

      • awng782

It sold just over 15,000 copies in Japan. Federation Force is the only Metroid game that has sold worse.

  • masterjedi

Gotta stop looking at the raw numbers in a vacuum and start looking at them in context. Fusion, Zero Mission, Hunters and Federation Force were the main Metroid games to release on handheld systems in Japan.

Fusion debuted at nearly 50k and went on to sell approx 155k.
Zero Mission debuted at nearly 40k and went on to sell approx 85k.
Hunters debuted at nearly 33k and went on to sell approx 90k.
Federation Force debuted at 4k and went on to sell approx 10k.
Now here we have Samus Returns debuting at 30k.

Seamus Returns is the first Metroid game to be released in Japan on any format since Federation Force and that game really left a bad taste in the mouths of fans. So to see people take a chance and come back to the franchise in such a big way is very promising I think. I would not be surprised to see Samus Returns hit the 100k mark in Japan before she’s done and I think that should be considered a pretty big success and bode well for reinvigorating interest in the franchise which should set the table nicely for Metroid Prime 4 success.

And on a final note, YAY ARMS!!

    • GoldenTriforce

Also Metroid was never really a Japanese seller in the first place (I’d bet that FF didn’t even have much of an effect on the overall series image), so 30k week one is normal for the entire series
