Yacht Club Games talks Shovel Knight: Specter of Torment

Last night, Yacht Club Games finally showed a trailer for Shovel Knight: Specter of Torment at The Game Awards. The studio shared a bit more on the expansion in a blog post shortly afterwards.

Perhaps what’s most interesting here is that the team is making Specter of Torment “from the ground up so that it can be a completely unique standalone experience.” It’s a prequel, featuring “new areas, new music, new enemies, new objects, new boss fights, new weapons, new armors, and way, way more than ever before.” It really does sound like its own thing in many ways.

Here’s the full update from Yacht Club:

“Whoah! Did you get everything!? You’ll not only play through Specter Knight’s own story, but also see new areas, new music, new enemies, new objects, new boss fights, new weapons, new armors, and way, way more than ever before. Even the villainous boss knights have prepared new tricks and tactics!

Does that sound like a new game?! Well, that’s because we’re building Specter of Torment from the ground up so that it can be a completely unique standalone experience.

While Plague of Shadows followed an alternate parallel campaign, Specter Knight travels a new path in this amazing prequel. It’s your mission as Specter Knight to recruit the Order of No Quarter for The Enchantress! Specter Knight’s campaign truly is his own adventure, and we can’t wait for everyone to get their hands on it this Spring.”

So… Are we paying for this?

    • Vinicius

No. If you bought the game, all the DLC is Free.

I’m aware of this. But the way it’s worded… Saying they did it from the ground up and how it’s a prequel and stuff sounds so vague.

I once spoke to Yacht Club Games via a stream and they confirmed Spector Knight and King Knight are free DLC.

Hopefully it’s still like that. I wouldn’t mind paying though. I want them to be done with dlc so they can focus on a new game!

These guy’s are the masters at keeping secrets. The dlc was supposed to come out in January. I imagine it was delayed because they are working on a secret project.

How much longer can they keep working for free ?
I am impressed by their dedication, but it seems suicidal to make what’s pretty much a full blown sequel and just give it away to everyone.

      See my answer above.

Hopefully, but it wouldn’t be surprising that the delay was caused because at some point they felt it was more interesting to add whole new levels and equipment to the DLC instead of going the slightly easier recycled way as they did with Plague Knight.

It’s not entirely for free, when they released Plague Knight it gave a boost on the sales of Shovel Knight, so the DLC it’s probably going to attract new customers. Also there’s the kickstarter thing, they promised all this for the game and it can hurt they relationship with the gamers if they don’t delivery it.

        That’s definitely true.
But they are really doing much more than expected with these DLCs and I wonder if the new sales are worth it compared to what could be sold with a standalone entry.
It’s good for their reputation at least.
