3. Buy and Sell at Re-Tail

A new shop in New Leaf is the Re-Tail store. It serves as a second-hand store of sorts, you can buy items as well as sell your own items. The items you put up for sale can be bought by other villagers or friends visiting your town, and you can even encourage your villagers to buy your items. You can also customize your furniture pieces here, for example, you can change the cloth of a couch either to a preset pattern or to a custom pattern of your own, as well as changing the wood grain of the couch’s arms. You can add custom designs to nearly any piece of furniture, allowing you to make your own custom themed room.

2. The New (Leaf) World of Fashion

Rather than the simple boy shirt and girl dress that would just be layered with a pattern of some kind like in previous games, now there are many different unique-looking articles of clothing. Due to the new proportions of the player character, new clothing items such as pants, skirts, shoes, and even socks are available. And, in a very progressive move, none of the clothing is gender-locked.

Pattern making at the Able Sisters’ has been expanded, allowing you to really flesh out your styles by making patterns for the front, back, left arm, and right arm of a garment. These patterns can be converted into QR codes and shared for others to scan, so they can easily acquire the patterns. Sure beats the color-by-numbers method of previous games!

Pattern-making has also been improved, with a much larger color selection that is organized by color and shade. You can also keep the colors you want to use on a palette for easy access.

1. Your Town, Your Rules!

In Animal Crossing: New Leaf, you are now the mayor of your town. You have an office at the Town Hall, and even your own secretary! From your office, you can choose public works projects and pass laws for your town.

There are various public works projects you can start to improve your town. Projects include facilities, buildings, and landscaping. Facilities you can build include fire hydrants, bridges, campsites, benches, and lamp posts, and new buildings, such as shops, can be erected on the Main Street. Landscaping includes various topiaries in different shapes and sizes, as well as structures like statues.

Laws dictate how your town operates. There are four laws to choose from: Beautiful, Early Bird, Night Owl, and Luxury. Under the Beautiful law, villagers will pull weeds (which will show up less) and plant flowers, and there will not be any garbage in the rivers and ocean. Early Bird makes shops open and villagers wake up earlier, but shops will close and villagers will go to sleep at their normal times. Night Owl is the opposite: shops open and villagers wake up at normal times, but close and go to sleep later. The Luxury law increases the price you can sell items for, however it also increases the price of items that you buy.
