Congratulations to the guys at Ubisoft!

Okay, so this isn’t part 2 of the “Has Nintendo betrayed their fanbase?” article, but it’s something that I feel I’ve gotta type up at some point or another. Believe it or not, tomorrow marks my one-year anniversary of writing for Nintendo Everything, and because of that I feel the need to dish out some major “thank you”s right about now. It’s been an absolutely fantastic year for me and video games, and I definitely want to give a big chunk of the credit to everyone that visits, contributes, or enjoys the site. You guys are the best.

First, I’ve gotta thank the bulk of the reason this site is as popular as it is: You guys. Everyone that is reading this, everyone that has commented on a news story, an article, joined the forum, or sent in a news tip; you guys are the biggest reason I do this (and because I enjoy it, of course!). Without you, I wouldn’t be where I am, and neither would NE. I think I speak for everyone that contributes to the site when I give you guys a major thank you. I really don’t know how many of you there are out there, but I’d send each and every one of you a personal thank you card if I could. I’m not sure what brought you to NE in the first place, but I am so thankful you’re here and sticking around! Hopefully you’ll stay for many, many years to come.

A recent study by the American Stroke Association has showcased some more interesting results about the Wii and stroke victims. A pilot study conducted among 20 stroke survivors actually showed a ‘significant improvement’ for those who played Wii over those who didn’t. Patients were subjected to playing games such as “Jenga”, “Cooking Mama”, and “Wii Tennis” over a two-week long period, and compared to those who participated in a “recreational group”.

“This is the first randomized clinical study showing that virtual reality using Wii gaming technology is feasible and safe and is potentially effective in enhancing motor function following a stroke. The beauty of virtual reality is that it applies the concept of repetitive tasks, high-intensity tasks, and task-specific activities that activates special neurons (called ‘mirror neuron system’) involved in mechanisms of cortical reorganization (brain plasticity). Effective rehabilitation calls for applying these principles.” -Gustavo Saposnik, Director of the Stroke Outcomes Research Unit, St. Michael’s Hospital

My only question? Why are they making these stroke victims play Jenga, of all games?

A new studio founded by industry veterans from companies such as Capcom and Sega was formally announced today, stating that it was a Wii-focused studio in “stealth development” on a new family-friendly Wii game.

“Judobaby is committed to creating a line of fun, humorous, ‘pick-up & play’ products to entertain the entire family. Our focus is on providing top quality entertainment that brings the whole family together through gaming experiences that have yet to be offered.” – Company CEO Dan Mueller

Other notable people involved include art director Ben Harrison (Crystal Dynamics, Sony Computer Entertainment), Richard Anderson (Sony Computer Entertainment, Capcom), and David Ralston (EA, Blueshift, Capcom, Studio 8). Best of luck to the new studio on their game!

Yup, it’s the truth. According to VG247.com the Wii has a total of 76 games that have sold over 1 million copies, 22 of which are first-party and the remaining 54 third-party. I’m not sure how impressed to be with this, as I can guarantee that a good chunk of these games are “Carnival Games” or “Just Dance” style, but either way, good for Wii.

Additionally, it was revealed that Wii’s fastest selling game to date is New Super Mario Bros., with just under 12 million in about 3 months.

Tales of Graces, which released in Japan this past December, is being recalled by Namco Bandai due to an abundance of bugs. It is said that these bugs occur mostly on “New Game+” replays, so it’s a good thing they’re being replaced! Plus, this also means that the bug will (hopefully) not be present in the North American version of the game.

“Why compete with the 360? The Conduit is a great example. Talk about an incredible piece of technology. Those guys did an amazing job of modernizing the Wii engine. It’s got to be frustrating for [Conduit dev, High Voltage]. Gamers will see the flaws, not your work. They’re not going to see all the effort you put in. Any developers working on the Wii, I recommend you stylise the look because it helps. I think it looks cool anyway.” -Red Steel 2 Creative Director, Jason Vandenberghe

You know… I hate to admit it, but I almost have to agree with him on this one. Just looking at how The Conduit’s visuals were received, and then seeing the praise given to games like Red Steel 2 or No More Heroes, it’s hard to disagree! Plus, I do prefer my games a little on the unrealistic side.

Before getting into the article this week, I want to mention a few quick things to everyone:

Firstly, thanks to all of you for your wonderful responses to last week’s WDYT article. With such a quantity and quality of them I’ll definitely go over the general consensus at the end of this article.

Next, I just want to let you know that I’ll for sure be doing more video features in the future. I can tell you guys definitely enjoyed not having to read so much, so hopefully I can do even longer videos in the future, with more original content!

Lastly, I apologize for not being able to do a video feature this week. I came into the weekend ill-prepared, and didn’t allot enough time to put one together. Next week, though, I plan on having another for you guys! Anyway, on with the good stuff…
