New Super Mario Bros. 2 Owners Get Free Downloadable Coin Rush Course Pack Based on Classic Games

REDMOND, Wash.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Nintendo fans worldwide have amassed a mountain of more than 300 billion gold coins in New Super Mario Bros. 2 for the Nintendo 3DS system, and the tally continues to climb. To reward players for hitting this massive milestone, Nintendo is offering a free pack of Coin Rush courses that game owners can download wirelessly within the game at no extra charge (broadband Internet access is required).

The free Gold Classics Pack was inspired by games like Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario Bros. 3, and includes three new courses that can be played in Coin Rush mode. Players can test their skills, then share and challenge other players’ records through the StreetPass feature. The Gold Classics Pack is now available and will be free for a limited time to New Super Mario Bros. 2 owners. Starting Feb. 1, 2013, the pack will be available to purchase for $2.50 in the United States. A variety of other downloadable Coin Rush course packs are available for purchase through the New Super Mario Bros. 2 game.

An unexpected Nintendo Direct mini was published by Nintendo’s Japanese division just a short while ago. The video reveals that, at least in Japan, a new “Golden Classic Course Pack” for New Super Mario Bros. 2 will be free for a limited time. The Big N is making this offer available to celebrate the news of 300 billion coins collected in the game worldwide.

Each of the DLC’s levels are based on ones found in Mario titles of old. Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata said that questionnaire feedback helped the team in determining which courses would be included.

Remade levels from Super Mario Bros. include 1-1, 1-2, and 1-4. Super Mario Bros. 3’s 1-1 and 1-5 will be represented, too. Courses feature hidden routes, and if you come across them, you’ll wind up in other classic areas.

Players can download the Golden Classic Course Pack for free between November 27 and January 1. From then on, it’ll cost 200 yen.

Nintendo sold more than 1.2 million hardware units during the past week, according to NOA president Reggie Fils-Aime.

Breaking things down more specifically, over 700,000 consoles were sold. Wii U came in 400,000 units sold while the Wii moved another 300,000 systems.

Regarding Wii U’s performance, Reggie said that the console’s limited stock impacted sales. He noted that the company “is essentially sold out of retail” and when stock is replenished at stores, “they’re selling out immediately.”

The original 3DS will allegedly be getting another price drop soon. Nintendo will adjust the MSRP to $139.99 in about two weeks, new rumors suggest. The system currently retails for $169.99.

Next week, you’ll be able to grab the 3DS for $10 cheaper than the upcoming price drop. Target will apparently sell the handheld for $129.99.

Meanwhile, a 3DS XL bundle featuring Mario Kart 7 will also be available next week – at least at Target – for $199.99.
