Nintendo discussed methods they are most likely going to peruse in order to solve memory issues on the Wii at their fall press conferences this past week. As things stand as of now, the primary approach that will most likely be implemented when the update launches in spring will be “to make it so that Wii software can be purchased by directly downloading it onto an SD memory card” and/or “to make it so that software stored on SD memory card can be played on Wii console by going through much simpler procedures.” These points were both presented at the press conferences this week, but the explanation is nebulous and there has been no mention of playing games directly off the SD card.

So, when the update finally is made public in a few months, we’ll be able to download content to the SD card and then, through easier processes, play the games on Wii. Still, the question remains over whether or not, in the end, games will be able to run right off an SD card. While this could mean that you may not be able to enjoy content as most are expecting, Nintendo seems willing to make the current storage solution somewhat easier for those who are finding issues with storage.

On Thursday, Nintendo discussed a new shop feature, DSiWare on the DSi which is somewhat of an equivalent of WiiWare. However, this means that Wii points would not be the only currency available. Nintendo additionally revealed “Nintendo points” on the same day and many assumed that this meant Wii points would get renamed and points for DSWare and points on the Wii Shop Channel would mix together. This is not the case, though. While Nintendo is interested in renaming Wii point cards to “Nintendo PointsPrepaid Card” in Japan, both the Wii and DS shop features will use its own points system.

Basically, this means the points aren’t applied to one universal account. When you cash a Nintendo Points Prepaid Card on the DSi, those points will not be able to be used on the Wii (and vise-versa). There are DSi points and Wii points, both of which are seperate from each other.

Fuji Soft will soon be offering video content in Japan including movies and typical TV shows. There will be a wide selection when it releases in December. Some examples of content which will be able to be purchased are educational shows, anime, and much more. It costs 500 Wii points to download the Everyone’s Theater channel. Then, a seperate fee (100 – 400 Wii points) will be needed in order to download a particular video.

Definitely an intriguing service, but one which is highly unlikely of releasing in other territories at this point.
