3DS

Nintendo Power has pulled back the curtain on Renegade Kid’s first 3DS title. Actually, some of you may remember that the title was originally going to be a 3D platformer for the DS. Now it’s in 2D, and for the 3DS’ eShop. You can check out a bunch of details on the revitalized project below.

– Heading to the eShop
– 2D side-scrolling platformer
– Renegade Kid publishing the game themselves
– This is the first time Renegade Kid is publishing
– Jools Watsham said that he was toying around with a pixel version of Max when he discovered that a 2D version of the game could work
– Game was redesigned when they found out about the 3DS
– Plot is the same
– Max needs to use his water cannon/water-powered jet pack to defeat monsters that come from the ground
– Go to the foreground and background
– Variety of environments
– Levels include “a dark, wintery land; a fiery temple; a space cosmos; and a fluffy cloudville”
– Collect “Water Sprites” in each level
– Water Sprites unlock new levels
– Secrets and power-ups
– Being made for on-the-go gamers
– Game doesn’t require large chunks of play

As indicated in our Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D review summary from Nintendo Power, the magazine didn’t sound too happy with Navi. That’s understandable, as the fairy had a reputation of being a bother in the original game due to her constant chants of “hey, listen” and “watch out” (just a few examples). But according to Nintendo Power, she’s now more annoying than ever.

It sounds like the developers added some additional comments for Navi. Now she’ll often tell you that you should take a break from playing or watch a hint movie (a new feature in the 3DS version).

Nintendo Power explained:

“…There are so many clear improvements in the 3DS release that it’s tough to quibble, but I could do without the extra comments from Link’s fairy companion Navi, whose distracting alerts were already borderline annoying in the original game. While she does sometimes give useful hints, more often then not she interrupts the game to repeatedly suggest that you take a break from playing or go watch a hint movie. Turning to her for advice when I’m hopelessly stuck only to get great tips like ‘Keep Moving!’ or ‘The barrier is blocking the door, there must be some way of opening it’ is like pouring salt into a wound.”

This information comes from Cubic Ninja director Ken Awata…

“…The image I had was based more on children’s building blocks than on other video games. However, I’m a big fan of games like Portal and Little Big Planet, both of which I think may have influenced Cubic Ninja’s overall style.”

This was actually a game that was on my radar for some time. But, unfortunately, even though Cubic Ninja is inspired by Portal and LittleBigPlanet 2, it doesn’t seem that the title matches the quality of those games.

The second review of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D is in, courtesy of the latest issue of Nintendo Power. The reviewer thought highly of the title, giving it 9.5/10. Nintendo Power dished out the same score to the N64 release over a decade ago.

As you may have expected, the review was full of praise. The magazine made sure to point out the positive impact of the 3D visuals and the new touchscreen usage. Although Navi is apparently more of a nuisance this time around, Nintendo Power believes that the 3DS game is significant better than the N64 version.

Did n-Space spill the beans on Heroes of Ruin before they were supposed to? That may have been the case, as there’s no trace of the game on n-Space’s Facebook anymore. Perhaps Square Enix was planning on announcing the game at E3… but there’s no chance of that happening now!

The 3DS will be getting its first Metal Gear action this year. Hideo Kojima reconfirmed that Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D is still on track for late 2011. Earlier this month, we heard that the title would be released in November. Based on Kojima’s quote, that launch time frame could certainly be realistic.

This information comes from Ubisoft UK Managing Director Rob Cooper…

“Ubisoft has always been a big Nintendo supporter and we’ve always positioned ourselves early on their new formats. I know that sales of the 3DS haven’t been up to the level Nintendo initially hoped but there are some key brands coming to the format and these will be big hardware drivers in the run up to Christmas. I’m certain that 3DS will have a good Christmas.”

The 3DS’ poor sales shouldn’t be shocking to anyone. Simply put, the game is lacking must-have software. There’s a couple of enjoyable games, but nothing to really make anyone rush out and purchase the system. Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D, Mario Kart 3D, and Super Mario 3DS should make an impact on the situation.

In April, it was discovered that Square Enix filed a trademark for Heroes of Ruin. The title has been unveiled today, and may surprise some fans.

It looks like n-Space is teaming up with Square Enix to bring this brand new project to the 3DS. This is n-Space’s first game for the handheld, and I believe this is their first partnership with Square Enix. Only one piece of art has been released, but hopefully we’ll receive some concrete information soon.
