The Game Boy Advance lives

Posted on 15 years ago by (@NE_Brian) in DS, GBA, News | 6 Comments

The DS has been in the spotlight for the past few years, leaving the Game Boy line to take a backseat while Nintendo’s new portable soaks up the limelight. But no – The Game Boy Advance is not dead. A Nintendo representative told Kotaku that the GBA is still seeing shipments across the world. In fact, 420,000 units were sold in the last fiscal year.

gba-huge

The image above is a concept for a Game Boy Advance predecessor from 1995. Compared to the DSi, you can tell that it was rather large. Design Director Masato Kuwahara, at GDC last night, said, “There’s no way you’re fitting that thing in your pocket. You would be shocked to see how big that device was.” Other issues plagued the prototype including the graphics engine performance problems.

touch-panel-adapter

This was another prototype Kuwahara revealed. It is a touch-screen adapter for the Game Boy Color, though the software development team did not think highly of it because the LCD screen lacked a backlight. Miyamoto was interested in the adapter when used on the GBA SP yet it was never released. Still, Kuwahara believes that his prototype “led to the appearance of the Nintendo DS.”

All of the information below comes from a huge “Scribes” update from Rare:

“No immediate plans to put Kazooie or Tooie on Virtual Console, as you might expect now that they’re both due out on Xbox Live Arcade.” – (Banjo-Kazooie/Tooie on VC)

“Nevertheless, requests for Banjo Pilot 2 don’t come along every day, even wholly impractical ones. Let’s see what someone who worked on the original game has to say on the matter:

‘No.’

I’m afraid I can’t clarify whether that’s ‘no’ to the inclusion of every single Banjo character, ‘no’ to any possibility of a sequel whatsoever, or just a “no” of quiet horror at your typing. – (Possibilities of Banjo Pilot 2)

“We have nothing to disclose on DS projects at the moment, but I’d say big brand spin-offs would be more likely than all-new properties, the DS market being so vast that the extra push of recognisable IP is often needed to help a title stand out. But who knows? One of our designers might come up with a brilliant idea for a stylus-controlled game about wafting aside clouds of cow flatulence, and we’d be off like a shot.” – (Future DS projects)

Eternity’s Child

– still coming nto WiiWare
– delayed a bit due to difficulty in porting over from PC
– Alten8 (publisher) is working on it, and it should be out this year

– cancelled GBA/SNES project coming to WiiWare
– Wiiimote in classic NES style

– 16-bit style graphics
– Luc is the concept artist/producer, and he will handle some design aspects
– Shane Gil will be the director and lead designer
– development is underway
Cartoon series

Cartoon series

– Luc is actually working on a cartoon series as well, while he took a break from the game industry. No more details on that project at this time.

And…Here’s footage of the canceled GBA title.

Once again, this is news from the interview with Dan Houser, cofounder of Rockstar Games..

NP: What do you feel are some GTA features that, because of the technical limitations, won’t make it into the game?

DH: Well, really, the perspective. To go to the isometric view rather than make it fully 3-D. There was never any belief that we’d do anything different than that because we’re always about high performance and the number of cars. I think that’s the only major difference between this and the console version of the game in terms of what the game is. It’s a city with a criminal adventure stuck in, and a bunch of things to do. Because we’re making this game from the ground up for the DS, we were never really looking at it in terms of limitations. It’s more in terms of strengths, and what works well on the hardware and what doesn’t work well on the hardware. Obviously minigames work ’cause you can bounce between two screens so well. We weren’t trying to compress something down this time–it’s more building up for the hardware.

There are some other details I’ve written down from the interview, but I’m pretty sure these are the last important notes from the GTA coverage.

– Wanted to capture the feeling of the GTA games but wanted to provide the game with some evolution too
– Leeds was very keen about making a DS game, took awhile to figure out the format that the game would take
– In some ways it was more difficult to figure out how to make a GTA on the DS rather than on PSP
– Might be the reason why PSP games have come about earlier
– Important to the devs that the game feels like a city, feeling of GTA in general
– Nintendo has really been supporting the game
– GBA version of GTA wasn’t really looked at when making Chinatown Wars
– This is a game built ground up for the hardware
– Once again, simply couldn’t do full 3-D for the game.
– Same developers also created Max Payne for GBA
– GTA IV didn’t touch on Chinatown too much, but developer’s weren’t really conscious of that – it’s not really a sequel
