Wii U

Releasing Yakuza 1 & 2 HD on Wii U “was an experiment”, according to series creator and Yakuza Studio head Toshihiro Nagoshi.

Nagoshi told EDGE that he was “interested in the Wii U format and curious about how many Wii U users would be interested in the Yakuza series”. This information could only be obtained by “releasing something.”

Nagoshi probably didn’t attain the results he was probably looking for. The game’s sales “weren’t great,” he said.

“The PlayStation format has a lot of users, so we knew that our audience is there. With the HD versions, we had already made the game once for PS2 and then in HD, so it was quite easy to port it to Wii U, whereas [porting] a whole new title is a bit tricky. I was interested in the Wii U format and curious about how many Wii U users would be interested in the Yakuza series, and the only way to find that out was to try releasing something. It was an experiment. But the sales weren’t great.”

Perhaps due to the game’s lack of multiplayer, Batman: Arkham Origins will be priced at $50 when it launches on Wii U next month. Other versions cost $60 and include online play.

Some retailers (well, notably GameStop) have the game listed for $60. However, Warner Bros. confirmed that the official MSRP on Wii U is indeed $50.

Amazon probably has the best deal for Origins at this point. You’ll receive a $10 credit along with Deathstroke DLC.

LucasArts canned a whole bunch of projects over the years – including one game planned for Wii U.

According to Kotaku, the company intended to release a few titles leading up to the reintroduction of Star Wars Battlefront. One of these games was given the tentative name “Version Two”. The site reports through a source that the project “grew from the remnants of a project code-named Wingman that was going to be a Wii U title modeled after the old TIE Fighter and X-Wing games.”

Kotaku has a bit of footage from Wingman, which can be found here.

Netflix Super HD is now available for use on Wii U. Previously, the viewing option was only available on certain devices with a direct connection to Netflix.

Netflix Super HD primary benefit relates to an improved visual experience. Content supported by Netflix Super HD will be shown in the highest-quality streams available on the service.

Not much has been said about the Wii U version of Watch_Dogs, but Eurogamer did manage to get a few words out of creative director Jonathan Morin as part of a recent interview.

Regarding Wii U, Morin spoke a bit about the game’s visuals. The game can’t be classified as current-gen or next-gen when it comes to graphics, but Morin did admit that they’re “maybe closer to current-gen”.

He said:

“I think it’s even going to be a bit better. If you pump the PC to its maximum there are things in the filtering and rendering that I think are possible on high-end PCs that are pretty amazing. Wii U is pretty much in-between – it’s neither of them, not current-gen, maybe closer to current-gen than next-gen.”

Since the Wii U’s unveiling, there was confusion as to whether the hardware was a brand new console. That’s still a bit of a problem, and coupled with the fact that quite a number of consumers don’t actually know what the Wii U is, has convinced the company to begin a new campaign to educate parents as kids. As MCV points out, Nintendo’s main focus will now be to reach out to Wii owners.

Nintendo has secured in-store space as UK retailer Tesco. The company intends to produce and release a five page leaflet to 300,000 Tesco customers that bought a Wii, but have yet to purchase an additional console. Vouchers offering money-off games may also be given away.

As far as advertising is concerned, Nintendo will display commercials for its big franchises, including Donkey Kong and Zelda. Ads will run “continuously from half-term to Christmas”, according to Nintendo.

On top of this, consumers can expect national press advertorials, significant online activity, and a huge out-of-home promotional tour targeted at 115,500 shoppers.

Nintendo tells MCV that both its Wii U and 3DS marketing budget is “significantly higher” than last year.

UK marketing director Shelly Pearce told MCV:

“After Modern Warfare 3 ended, we already knew from the beginning that we didn’t want to do another one. There was no way we were going to do another one. We wanted to go in a new direction. [Ghosts allowed us to] craft a story that gave players an origin synopsis into why you want to care about these characters. We never did [that] with any characters in Modern Warfare– they were standalone in the moment, and we wanted to have players feel like they could connect to Hesh and Logan and the Ghost squad.”

“I feel like it’s not necessarily the game that gave us that sense [of a fresh start], it’s more of moving into a new studio. It’s a unique situation to be in for any studio because for us making Ghosts, not only are we putting our heart and soul into the game but we’re still really close friends with other developers. I think what we’re trying to do is create a game without anything else holding us back. We really just want to focus on creating an experience that’s new and fresh for us because ultimately if we don’t enjoy what we’re doing we’re not going to be there.”

“So yeah, our main focus is just making sure that we ourselves would go home and play Ghosts without thinking of anything else on the side.”
