Straight Right may have news on Wii U game soon

Straight Right, the team behind Mass Effect 3 on Wii U, is porting a “big” game set “in a well known franchise” to Wii U for Square Enix. What might that project be?
Square Enix and Straight Right haven’t haven’t said anything since that discovery was made, but news could be coming soon.
Last week, a fan asked the studio on Twitter if they could provide any hints about its mystery Wii U title. Straight Right didn’t budge, but hinted that it may have an update after DICE – which wrapped up a few days ago.

Giants Software believes Wii U has untapped potential

Giants Software’s Marc Schwegler of Farming Simulator fame feels that the Wii U has a lot of untapped potential. Schwegler told NowGamer that if this potential is explored, Nintendo’s newest console “could be more popular than Wii”.
Schwegler said:
“I think it should do as well as the Wii, maybe even better. It’s difficult to say, it’s really depending on what games they will add that really use the extra device you get with it. There’s a lot of potential that’s not tapped yet, if it is and if it will be then I think it could be more popular than the Wii because it’s something more. Wii motion was okay, everybody copied it but it’s done, people are returning to regular controllers because it’s easier to play and you have much more options. A touch device, you could put a whole set of controls on there.”
SEGA says TimeGate only helped Gearbox with Aliens: Colonial Marines

SEGA has denied rumors that Aliens: Colonial Marines was primarily developed by TimeGate Studios. A rumor originating from last year reared its head yesterday, claiming that Gearbox only worked on the game’s multiplayer aspects.
Speaking with Playnews during the Italian Aliens: Colonial Marines’ launch event, SEGA of America senior producer Matthew J. Powers denied the speculation.
Powers said:
“Absolutely not, the game has been developed by Gearbox Software. Other studios [like Timegate] helped Gearbox on the production of single and multiplayer.”
Ancel, other devs protest Rayman Legends delay

Even Michel Ancel is upset about Rayman Legends’ delay. The Rayman creator has been seen with other dev team staffers in photos protesting Ubisoft’s decision to push back the game.
A banner depicted in snapshots includes the words “Release Rayman. Support Ubisoft Montpelier.” Rayman’s speech bubble says “SVP” – which is “please” in English – and the character himself is crying.
Rayman Legends’ delay on Wii U was announced last week. The game is essentially done, but it won’t be hitting Nintendo’s console until early September so that work on newly announced PlayStation 3/Xbox 360 versions can be completed. Ubisoft wishes to release all three editions of Rayman Legends simultaneously in order to avoid two separate launches.

Why Capcom Arcade Cabinet and Darkstalkers aren’t on Wii U, support hinted at for the future

Capcom has supported Wii U with two game’s thus far: Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate and Resident Evil: Revelations, which will arrive on the console soon. Aside from these two releases, more support from the publisher seems to be on the way.
When asked by a fan why Capcom Arcade Cabinet and Darkstalkers Resurrection aren’t coming to Wii U, Capcom’s Christian Svensson explained that the titles’ inception came “before having visibility into the digital Wii U market or Nintendo’s policies/vehicles pertaining to digital.” Svensson did leave a tease for Wii U eShop fans, noting that they “will have things to look forward to in the future.”
Multiplatform refers to”more than one”. It does not necessarily mean “all”.
To answer your question more clearly, the projects in question were conceived of and started before having visibility into the digital Wii U market or Nintendo’s policies/vehicles pertaining to digital.
Fear not though. Wii U eShop fans will have things to look forward to in the future.
In another thread discussing Wii U support in general, Svensson additionally teased:
We’ve got MH Tri Ultimate and RE: Revelations announced for Wii U with more fun you’ll hear about “in the not-so-distant future ™”.

Zelda: Wind Waker design sketches

Accompanying The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker’s release in Japan over a decade ago was a special “Zelda Box”. The package included a copy of the game, a promo book, a soundtrack, Link and Moblin figures, and a guidebook. Tucked away in the guidebook were a bunch of amazing Wind Waker sketches.

Rumor: Gearbox only made Aliens: Colonial Marines’ multiplayer

For the most part, it has been known (or at least assumed) that TimeGate Studios was lending a hand to Aliens: Colonial Marines’ development. The studio’s involvement appears to have been deeper than initially expected, however.
An unconfirmed forum post from a Gearbox staffer, posted last year, states that TimeGate actually handled a majority of Aliens’ creation. Gearbox was mainly relegated to the title’s multiplayer component.
The message says:
Hate to say it, but I wouldn’t get your hopes up too high for Colonial Marines. I used to work at Gearbox, and the development of that game has been a total train wreck, going on what, 6 years now? Gearbox isn’t even making the game, except for the multiplayer. Primary development was outsourced to TimeGate Studios, which has a less than stellar past.
I hope it proves me wrong, as I still have alot of friends still working at Gearbox, but I am expecting it to be average at best.
Aliens: Colonial Marines hasn’t exactly received the best reception thus far. If this information is true, it would have been interesting to see how the shooter would have turned out had Gearbox been the game’s sole developer.

Skylanders rakes in $1 billion in worldwide retail sales

Activision’s Skylanders franchise just keeps on rolling. Yet another sales milestone was announced today – Skylanders: Spyro’s Adventure and Skylanders Giants have collectively accumulated over $1 billion in retail sales worldwide. The feat was accomplished in 15 months.
Both Skylanders titles outsold the likes of Beyblades, Star Wars and Transformers toys in the US and Europe last year. Over 100 million Skylanders toys have been sold through January 2013.
Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activision Publishing, commented on the news:
“The Skylanders franchise became the first kids’ videogame IP to cross the $1 billion mark in just 15 months, and I think we are still just starting to realize its potential. We knew that the simple, but magical idea, of bringing your toys to life in a video game could change both the video game and the toy industries, and more importantly, change the way kids play. And this fall, we’re looking forward to delivering to fans our latest break-through innovation, Skylanders SWAP Force, which lets kids customize their own characters, bringing toys to life to a whole new level.”

Everybody’s favorite analyst Michael Patcher had this to say about Wii U sales:
“Nintendo must improve sell-through of its Wii U if it hopes to maintain significant market share in the next generation. The console received a tepid response from consumers, for a variety of reasons: first, we think that the console was misunderstood by many as a peripheral for the Wii; second, the price point for the Wii U is relatively high, and the launch was into a weak economy; and third, firstparty software support was thin, and third-party software was not sufficiently differentiated to convince many that they needed a Wii U as a replacement for their Xbox 360 or PS3. If the Wii U is to thrive, we think that Nintendo must market it more effectively, must speed up the pace of first-party development, and must convince third parties that they must support the Wii U or they will lose market share.”
