Wii U

Update: A few more details have come in. We’ve posted those below as well.

– “If we can’t provide overwhelming fun not possible with free or 85-yen games, Nintendo and consoles have no value.”
– Iwata wants to explain Miiverse service in detail through a Nintendo Direct before Wii U launches
– Can become friends with others through Miiverse
– It’s a critical mission for Nintendo to increase the number of friends to play with
– Iwata contrasted this with the prior requirement of Friend Code exchanges to prevent a few bad apples from ruining a safe gameplay experience
– Iwata thinks third-party share of software sales on Wii U to increase earlier than on DS or for foreign publishers on Wii

Original post: The transcript of Nintendo’s latest investor’s briefing Q&A has been published online. Although it’s only available in Japanese at the moment, a few tidbits have been translated.

First, one of the major points to come out of the Q&A concerns the Wii U price point. Nintendo president Satoru Iwata said that the 3DS’ quick price cut affected pricing of the upcoming console, as the company did not want consumers to worry about a similar situation. The Wii U price was determined based on customer expectations as well as to keep people from holding out for a big, sudden price drop.

Iwata also spoke briefly about the popularity of Nintendo Direct. Between 600,000 and one million viewers have tuned in to the past few broadcasts. The Japanese Animal Crossing: New Leaf presentation has been viewed over 1.1 million times on YouTube.

It also looks like Iwata addressed the topic of new IPs. He told investors that criticizing a lack of innovation over IP-heavy lineups means you’re looking only at the titles and not their contents. Iwata noted that franchises such as Mario and Pokemon would decay if they lacked innovation.

It took EA awhile, but the company has finally confirmed that Need for Speed: Most Wanted is heading to Wii U. The game won’t be ready for some time, however: it’s expected sometime next year.

An EA representative said:

“We are very excited to deliver Need for Speed: Most Wanted on more platforms and to more gamers. Starting Oct. 30, Most Wanted will be available on X360, PS3, PS Vita, Android and iOS. Then in 2013, Nintendo fans will be able to experience what it means to be Most Wanted amongst their friends on the Wii U.”

It’s currently unclear if the Wii U version will be cross-platform compatible. So we don’t know if it will make use of the Cloudcompete feature, nor do we know if players will be able to complete against users on other platforms.

Fortunately, Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed isn’t delayed. Amazon’s December listing was nothing more than an error.

Executive producer Steve Lycett told fans on the official SEGA forums:

“Relax, as far as we know that’s a mistake and they’ve got confused with the handheld dates. Mentioned it to SEGA so they know.”

Nintendo of Europe’s January 11, 2013 release date listing wasn’t a fluke. This is indeed the game’s expected launch in the continent.

Of course, Razor’s Edge will still be arriving alongside the Wii U’s launch in North America. I wonder why this isn’t the same case in Europe…

Sorry to those who were hoping to play Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate on the GamePad: the feature won’t be supported. Capcom confirmed that it can only be played on the television.

In other news, all of Ultimate’s downloadable quests from the 3DS version that have been released in Japan over the past year or so will also be made available for the game’s western release. I imagine that they’ll be included on the Wii U disc, too.

Another indie game is heading to the Wii U eShop. Ackkstudios, after being approved yesterday (with the whole process taking around two and a half weeks in total), is now an official Wii U developer. The studio’s first order of business is to port Two Brothers to the console – this is due out next year.

Ackkstudios also has a modern 3D RPG in the works. Information is currently unavailable aside from the fact that its graphical style is inspired by titles such as Earthbound and The World Ends with You, but the team is strongly considering the game for Wii U. In fact, there’s even a chance that it could be an exclusive to the system. Nothing is decided on for now, though.

You can look forward to more information about the mystery project at PAX East in March.
