So, here’s something interesting. Monolithsoft, the developers of Disaster: Day of Crisis, was originally approached by Nintendo back in early 2006 and was asked if the team could deliver an epic game in nine months, the time at which Wii would launch. Monolith accepted the task as is already known, but the team eventually hit a bump in the road. The overall feel emanating from the game was that it simply wasn’t fun, as a large majority of the game was based on walking up to people and saving people with the push of a button.

It was at this time, in October/November of 2006 that it was decided to put the game on hold. The content up to that point was canned in favor of a new schedule/budget. The current elements of Disaster were considered and the development on the title was restarted.

Other news worth noting
– Developers began working on Disaster again in early 2007, following Nintendo’s approval
– 2006 build had very little waggle functions and used the classic controller – developers delayed it into 2008 so that the game could be rethought and add in waggle
– Developers want to make a sequel, but that will only happen based on sale numbers. However, Monolith is mainly an RPG developer, so the producer will probably want to make an RPG game instead.

A pretty bumpy road for Disaster, no doubt. Although, Nintendo would never let a game that they had a role in onto the market unless the game had some quality. It’s just a shame that the game isn’t selling terribly well at this point.

REDWOOD CITY, CA – October 1, 2008 – Hudson Entertainment, the North American publishing arm for HUDSON SOFT, today announced their lineup for the 2008 Tokyo Game Show taking place in Japan this month. The Hudson lineup includes newly announced Kororinpa 2 for Wii™, Bomberman Ultra for PlayStation® Network and Fishing Master World Tour for Wii. Hudson will be exhibiting at the show from October 9-12, 2008.

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Crystal Bearers may be lost in the Square Enix vaults for now, but that isn’t stopping the company from creating original Final Fantasy titles for the Wii and DS. That’s right – Square Enix has revealed in the newest issue of Shonen Jump that Final Fantasy: Echoes of Time will be launching for the Wii/DS next year in Japan.

– Charlotta is the main character of the story and it revolves around a crystal.
– Pollux Engine allows for Wii + DS to be played at the same time
– Those who play on the DS or Wii can play online with each other
– Miis can be transferred from Wii to DS
– Gameplay is different for the Wii/DS meaning you can use the stylus or Wii controller
– Release date: 1/29/09 – Japan

Thanks to Bob for the heads up!

While we’re all busy speculating about new DS redesign rumors, the next Wii system, Wii HD, may already be in development. According to John Davison, a well-known industry insider, Wii HD would hit the market in 2011. With Wii HD, Nintendo would be putting “a greater emphasis on digitally distributed and backwardly compatible content” in addition to a graphical overhaul. Davison suggests that R&D costs at Nintendo have been rising, thus that issue would be something Nintendo would fix with Wii HD.

And as was mentioned above, the game has been confirmed for an 09 release in Japan.
