Wii U

Nintendo has confirmed that European Wii U owners are unable to purchase 18+ rated content from the eShop.

Why, you ask? Nintendo of Europe is based in Germany. That means the company must comply with German youth protection regulation. And thus, European gamers can’t purchase games like ZombiU or Assassin’s Creed III in the day time.

Nintendo of Europe explained:

β€œAt Nintendo we always aim to provide a safe gaming experience for fans of all ages and ensure that we comply with applicable legal age restriction requirements across Europe. Legal age restriction requirements vary across a number of European countries. Since Nintendo of Europe is based in Germany, Nintendo eShop is complying with German youth protection regulation which therefore applies to all our European markets. Under German law, content rated 18+ must be made available only at night. Therefore the accessibility of 18+ content in Nintendo eShop is limited to [USK: 22:00 UTC until 4:00 UTC] [PEGI: 23:00 UTC until 3:00 UTC].”

Irrational Games’ Ken Levine has a Wii U. He likes it, in fact. But that doesn’t mean we’ll see any of his games on the console anytime soon.

When asked if he had any news to share about Wii U, Levine said:

“We never had any news on the Wii U. I bought one and I like it. I play games on it! But in terms of development, nothing is brewing right now.”

So I guess BioShock Infinite won’t be released for Wii U? Though I don’t think anyone was counting on that happening…

The Homebrew Channel is now officially working on Wii U. While you can’t use the functionality in the console’s native OS, you can boot up the app through Wii mode.

All Homebrew Channel functionality works on Wii U. BootMii was initially unavailable, but it seems as though this was added back in following an update.

There are more details about the Homebrew Channel running on Wii U here.

This week’s Wii U eShop chart is as follows:

6. ZombiU
7. Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed
8. Scribblenauts Unlimited
9. Assassin’s Creed III
10. Chasing Aurora

Just as a heads up, the Wii U charts are a bit wonky at the moment. At the moment, you can’t access the listings from the “chart” menu. You have to link on the unique image/link shown on the main store page.

According to Longbow Research’s James Hardiman, the Wii U has been achieving an attach rate of 1.2 games sold per system. That tidbit is based on NPD data gathered in the US last month. The Wii saw a rate of two titles sold for every console when it launched in 2006.

So why have buyers been purchasing fewer Wii U games compared to Wii? Hardiman believes that consumers may not be inclined to pick up another game due to Nintendo Land’s inclusion in the Deluxe set, or the price tag of the Wii U is dissuading them from spending extra cash on releases.

Mass Effect 3: Special Edition has pretty much been a disaster the whole way around. Wii U owners, first of all, are starting off with the third game in the franchise rather than the first.

That wouldn’t be so terrible if EA hadn’t announced – and already released – the Mass Effect Trilogy on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. The package contains all three entries in the series. We’ve since heard that DLC such as Omega won’t be coming to the Wii U at this time.

Despite all of the negative news, there could be a bit of hope regarding Mass Effect’s future on Nintendo’s home console. In an interview with GamerSyndone, the company teased that it does have “plans” for Wii U, “but nothing to announce at this moment.” It also hinted that the Mass Effect Trilogy could head to Wii U, reiterating: “Never Say Never”.
