[Let’s Talk] Splatoon, one year later

Posted on May 28, 2016 by (@NE_Brian) in Let's Talk, Wii U

One year ago, Splatoon launched around the world. Having sold over four million copies, it’s one of the most successful Wii U games, making it an impressive debut for a new IP.

Splatoon underwent an amazing transformation since its initial reveal at E3 2014. There were gamers who were on board with the concept to start out with, but there was definitely some skepticism surrounding the title. That started to fade away closer to release as Nintendo shared more information. You could even argue that post-launch helped since new features, maps, and weapons were added in addition to fairly regular Splatfests.

Now that Splatoon is celebrating its one year anniversary, how do you feel about the game? Has your opinion changed at all since the original announcement/after launch? Let us know in the comments below!

Highlights from last week’s topic: Nintendo and movies

It was always my dream for, if and only if Nintendo goes under, for Disney to buy them, they’ve done great with their IP for decades now, and while I hope those financial issues never happen, it would be nice to see Pixar animate. However, the polished epic cutscenes in Galaxy, Skyward Sword, Brawl, and the like (even Pikmin Shorts 3D) give me confidence in Nintendo’s ability to animate an entire movie, or at least lend support. I was very impressed with Star Fox The Battle Begins as well. Whatever happens, I hope they don’t just license IP (Philips proved this is a bad idea), but actually play a part in production. Nintendo’s never made a BAD game, and if any production philosophy at all carries over to film, we’ll be all right.

I also feel like Nintendo is the perfect pioneer for interactive movies. If anyone could break the walls between games and movies effectively, it’s Nintendo.

As for IP, Zelda is the perfect choice, though a unique shared world would satisfy every fan at once. Subspace Emissary was the best thing ever, a full movie would be a dream come true!

I think a Smash Bros. movie would actually be cool, or something in that vein.

The most popular Nintendo franchises are light on the side of narration and rely on gameplay first and foremost, so I don’t think making a movie out of Mario or Zelda would do much service to the franchises. It would only make people expect deeper or more prominent narratives in the games, which wouldn’t be a good thing for both these people and the games imho.
With a silly crossover however, you can make an action packed scenario without the need to extend the stories beyond the scope of the games.

Otherwise, I think it would be best to go with story heavy franchises such as Fire Emblem.
