Most gamers can probably agree upon the fact that E3 2008 was pretty much a big disappointment. Nintendo seems to have learned from their mistakes, however. In fact, Satoru Iwata said a few months back that this year’s E3 will be a place where Nintendo will show off new software. Nintendo of America’s vice president of corporate affairs, Denise Kaigler, briefly spoke about this year’s E3 in an interview. Though she did not say too much, there is an interesting tidbit to take away.

“I tend not to ever say that [no comment] because I was a reporter and I always hated it when people would say that to me, so I kind of wiped those two words out of my vocabulary. I will say to you, wait until E3…We don’t have anything to say about E3 before June 2.” – Nintendo of America’s vice president of corporate affairs, Denise Kaigler

As you can tell, Ms. Keigler didn’t exactly hype up this year’s event. But IGN’s Matt Casmassina was apparently told by Nintendo representatives at GDC to bring a bring a big team of editors – Something that seems to imply that this year’s E3 will be chock-full of Nintendo goodies.

Frequent users of the Wii Shop Channel have come to know and love the “Wii-kly update” – a press release issued by Nintendo every Monday describing new WiiWare and Virtual Console titles that become available on a particular week. Due to the launch of the DSi and Virtual Console Arcade, however, the “Nintendo Download” report will be replacing the “Wii-kly update.” This isn’t a huge deal aside from the name change, but Wii and DSi owners can now expect DSiWare and Virtual Console Arcade titles to be included in the new press releases beginning on April 6.

SAN FRANCISCO & LONDON (March 26, 2009) – SEGA of America Inc. and SEGA Europe Ltd. today announced that Rick Nielsen, guitarist and founding member of the musical group Cheap Trick, would compose guitar tracks for the anticipated title, The Conduit™, for the Wii™ home video game system. Nielsen, who has penned and performed such hits as I Want You to Want Me and Surrender, is known for his distinctly powerful riffs and for his signature five-neck custom guitar and crowd-pleasing live performances.

“Rick Nielsen is a rock legend who just happens to be a really likeable guy,” said Sean Ratcliffe, Vice President of Marketing, Sega of America. “It is a testament to the growing word of mouth surrounding The Conduit that he took an interest in this project and was gracious enough to lend us his expertise.”

gba-huge

The image above is a concept for a Game Boy Advance predecessor from 1995. Compared to the DSi, you can tell that it was rather large. Design Director Masato Kuwahara, at GDC last night, said, “There’s no way you’re fitting that thing in your pocket. You would be shocked to see how big that device was.” Other issues plagued the prototype including the graphics engine performance problems.

touch-panel-adapter

This was another prototype Kuwahara revealed. It is a touch-screen adapter for the Game Boy Color, though the software development team did not think highly of it because the LCD screen lacked a backlight. Miyamoto was interested in the adapter when used on the GBA SP yet it was never released. Still, Kuwahara believes that his prototype “led to the appearance of the Nintendo DS.”
