Rumor: SEGA mulling over Sonic reboot for 2014

It’s no secret that SEGA has been experiencing significant financial troubles. Perhaps as a result of this, SEGA may be considering a potentially “massive” and “total” reboot for Sonic in 2014. SEGA and Team Sonic would be looking to monetize the IP which would provide the company with more capital.

That’s all according to a new rumor published on TSSZ News, who warns the reboot “is allegedly still in the exploratory phase”. The site also has speculatory information of possible gameplay changes for Sonic – including a change in structure similar to an open-world, a new universe, and more.

Head past the break for a rundown of TSSZ News’ report.

– Speed, platforming, and surreal environments would remain in tact
– Sonic and Dr. Eggman would maintain their basic roles
– Both characters could see a makeover
– All other elements are under review
– Surreal environments wouldn’t leave, but a new universe could be created
– This could essentially destroy most canon that precedes the relaunch and wiping the slate nearly clean
– New gameplay methods/gimmicks
– “Zones” could be revamped
– Zones would be expanded, would be their own worlds
– Individual levels masked as missions in each level
– Would be similar to Burnout Paradise, which is open-world and lacks a concrete, linear level structure
– New engine
– Next-gen engine capability similar to Unreal Engine 4, Frostbite 2
– SEGA not too concerned with photo-realism
– Collection model could be included
– SEGA may target the young demographic who are interested in physical collectibles
– This could end up being something similar to purchasing a Knuckles statue to gain the echidna as a playable character; unlock extra levels similarly
– Skylanders: Spyro’s Adventure is SEGA’s inspiration for this
– Other possible revenue models: physical toys and collectibles to have an interactive component with a new cartoon series, or to offer classic characters in-game straight up as DLC
– SEGA wants to attract a new generation of fans
