Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time

After plenty of speculation, Activision finally confirmed that it will soon be bringing Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time to Switch. Toys for Bob creative producer Lou Studdert has since offered additional insight into the new version of the game.

In terms of what to expect regarding frame rate and resolution, Studdert said:

Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time appears to be more than just a simple port on Switch. Twitter user Kanozu_ put together a few comparison screenshots with the PlayStation 4 version, which show that the team did more than merely decrease the resolution.

Based on what we’ve seen from the Switch version, it looks like the models and assets have been reworked. The game now employs a slightly more cel-shaded appearance on Nintendo’s console.

After much speculation, Activision has finally announced that Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time is coming to Switch. It will launch on March 12.

Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time first launched last October. Despite Activision not announcing a Switch version, it was listed for Nintendo’s console in the official website’s source code. Then shortly after release, fans spotted what appeared to be an internal profile for Switch in the game’s data.

Here’s an overview of Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time as well as the announcement trailer:

Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time

Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time has already been rumored for Switch. Before the game even released, Nintendo’s system was clearly mentioned on the official website. Talk about a Switch version is now picking up again following launch.

After digging through the .ini file for Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time, it’s apparently been discovered that a Switch profile is hidden within. While it’s possible that it could be leftover code from Unreal Engine 4 – which was used to develop the game – YouTuber Canadian Guy Eh points out that we can see “Copied from Falcon” multiple times in the code. Falcon was the project name for Spyro Reignited Trilogy, which is also on Switch and was made by Toys for Bob. In other words, some optimization code may have been borrowed for the base of Crash Bandicoot 4 on Switch.

Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy and Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled are both out on Switch, and by all accounts, they did pretty well. It was therefore a bit of a disappointment to see that Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time – the latest entry in the series – was not announced for the console as part of the initial reveal. There hasn’t been anything confirming a Switch release, but eagle-eyed fans have spotted something that gives a little bit of hope to cling on to.

Over on the official website for Crash Bandicoot 4, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One are the only listed systems. However, in the site’s source code, the platforms category also includes Switch. It’s unclear if this was merely a mistake or is a sign of future plans.

One possibility is that we could see Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time on Switch down the road. Activision has brought releases to Switch well after their initial launches as we saw with Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy and Spyro Reignited Trilogy. The company has also said it is “still evaluating additional platforms for a future date”.
