Our team has been making the most of the sunny California weather by walking long distances and enthusiastically testing all of the refinement and new features in Pokémon GO. Many of these refinements have been inspired by feedback received from our field testers in Australia, New Zealand, Japan and United States. Thank you for testing the app and for giving us such great feedback.

We have a few exciting updates to share. We’ve added a new Camera feature that enables Trainers to take photographs of their wild Pokémon encounters. Now you can take a photo of Squirtle next to that scenic lake or Ivysaur hanging out by the park. The photos will be saved to your phone’s camera roll to share with whomever you’d like. We can’t wait to see the varied environments in which trainers will find wild Pokémon.

We’re also thrilled to announce that Pokémon GO’s all-new music track is composed by GAME FREAK’s Junichi Masuda. We’ve been working closely with Masuda-san on several of the core game design elements of Pokémon GO and feel very fortunate to also have drawn from his decades of experience composing original music for the Pokémon games.

We enjoyed participating in Nintendo’s Treehouse Live Pokémon GO developer Q&A session at E3 today. With each day, we’re getting closer to launch and we can’t wait to share this game with everyone. Stay tuned for more details.

As revealed by Game Freak’s Junichi Masuda during today’s Treehouse stream, there are plans for Pokemon GO to connect with the main Pokemon games in the future. This won’t be at launch though, as the developers want players to focus on catching Pokemon in real life. The same stream also reconfirmed that trading will be coming to Pokemon GO at some point.

During today’s Nintendo Treehouse stream hosted at E3, it was announced that the Pokemon GO Plus device for Pokemon GO is planned for release at the end of July. It will be priced at $34.99.

Pokemon GO is only going to have the first generation of Pokemon to start out. However, in the future, there are plans for future generations to be added. This tidbit was shared during today’s E3 Treehouse stream.

Pokemon GO will be featured during tomorrow’s Treehouse stream in the form of a developer Q&A. We now know that Shigeru Miyamoto will be in attendance. Furthermore, he’ll be sharing something new about the app. Make sure you tune in!

Various members of the media were recently given the opportunity to go hands-on with Pokemon GO. One such outlet was GamesBeat, who has now written up a comprehensive report on the game. The site has information about the different aspects of gameplay, microtransactions, Pokemon GO Plus device, and more.

We’ve rounded up all of the details in summary form below. You can also read GamesBeat’s full piece here.

Basics

– Same data sets as Ingress are used: monuments, parks, and other local areas of intrigue
– Combination of the real world and the digital

“If you said, ‘What’s the core essence of the game?’ it is that trying to mimic what the world would be like if Pokémon really lived in it. That’s the fundamental mission of the game. They’re out there and you have to discover them and capture them.” – Niantic CEO John Hanke

– Customizable avatar
– Have your own level
– Your level goes up as you do tasks like catching Pokémon or battling at gyms
– Achievements included for things like how long you have walked, how many Pokémon you’ve caught, and even some for different-sized critters
– One achievement example” Big Magikarp achievement
– Map screen is the main interface
– This shows your real-world location and points of interest across the map
– PokeStops: blue cubes where you can collect items, Pokemon show up on the map as icons of each Pokemon
– Gyms show up initially as white icons, and then change based on which team is in control
– Catch Pokemon or collect items from PokeStops by walking close to those locations on the map

“To me … the heart of the game is integrating that sort of discovery and fun of the video game with the fun of being outside and exploring new places. I just think that’s a great combo and I hope players are into it.” – Hanke

– Pokemon GO will vibrate when you get close to a location of interest
– This is only when the app is open and on-screen
– Also has a low-power screen mode if you turn your phone upside down while walking to help conserve battery life
– Pokemon GO will still work and have places for people to visit even if you aren’t living in a major metropolitan city

Another round of Pokemon GO beta invites have been distributed to those who registered their interest in the United States. If you haven’t received a notice, you’ll need to wait for more invites to be sent out. We’ll let you know if that happens.

The Pokemon Company and Niantic have revealed new details about Pokemon GO. Today’s news comes as an early user test begins in the United States today. Tests are already underway in Japan, Australia, and New Zealand as well.

Find all of today’s information below. You can also look at some new screenshots in the attached gallery.

Pokémon GO will allow players to find and catch more than a hundred different Pokémon as they explore the world around them. When players approach a Pokémon in the wild, their phones will notify them and give them the opportunity to engage and catch the Pokémon using the phone’s touch screen to throw a Poké Ball. Poké Balls and other special items can be found at PokéStops, which are located at interesting places such as public art installations, historical markers, and monuments. During gameplay, Pokémon GO players will be encouraged to join one of three teams and engage in Gym battles with other teams. After joining a team, players will gain the ability to assign their Pokémon to Gyms. Like PokéStops, Gyms can be found at real locations in the world.

Battling is essential to any Pokémon game, and Pokémon GO is no different. Players can battle using the Pokémon they’ve caught to gain control of a Gym. By using their own Pokémon’s attacks and dodging incoming attacks by swiping left and right on the screen, Pokémon GO players can defeat the defending Pokémon to reduce the Gym’s Prestige. Once the Gym’s Prestige reaches zero, the defending team loses control of the Gym, and the victor’s Pokémon can be assigned to defend the Gym. When a team has control of a Gym, team members can increase its Prestige and level by training their Pokémon with other defending Pokémon. As the Gym gets to a higher level, the defending team gains the ability to assign more Pokémon to defend it. They can also team up with friends and battle together at a rival Gym to take down stronger Gyms faster.

The Pokemon Company and Niantic are expanding the Pokemon GO field test once more. Later this month, fans in the United States will be able to give the app a go.

The field test “will give users the opportunity to share early feedback and help improve the Pokemon GO experience.”
