Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom frame rate resolution

Digital Foundry just published a new technical analysis for The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, touching on aspects such as frame rate and resolution. The outlet also went over improvements compared to Breath of the Wild.

Here’s the full rundown:

– Volumetric lighting and light scatter back from Breath of the Wild
– Wind simulation extremely robust, affecting objects in the world to varying degrees, also returning from the last game
– Fog in caverns react to Link’s movements
– Tears of the Kingdom resolution similar to Breath of the Wild, but takes some steps to improve the presentation
– The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom resolution targets 900p in docked mode
– Nintendo seems to be using AMD’s FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR1)
– This is used to reach 1080p
– Image slightly sharper than Breath of the Wild, but subtle edge ringing to everything
– Dynamic resolution used
– Game changes internal resolution based on camera speed
– This doesn’t always happen, but is a common occurrence
– Max resolution in portable mode is 720p
– Some of the main cutscenes rendered out as low bitrate video files
– Most scenes are realtime
– Nearly every instance of performance loss improved with version 1.1.0 patch
– The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom frame rate holds very closely to 30 FPS target
– Not 100% perfect, Ultrahand is when frame rate can drop
– Kakariko Village is where performance can be an issue
– Slowdown much better than preview build
– Improved cloud system compared to Breath of the Wild
– Most visual improvements are in the sky and underground
– Position of the sun is completely different
– Shadow quality slightly improved
– LOD distance seems to have been slightly expanded
– Slight boost to loading times
