Lords of Shadow producer believes the days of 2D Castlevania games are gone

Posted on February 22, 2014 by (@NE_Brian) in General Nintendo, News

David Cox, producer of the Castlevania: Lords of Shadows series, believes that the days of 2D Castlevania games are gone.

Cox told GamesTM this month that even though hardcore gamers would appreciate a new 2D Castlevania, “the reality is that it’s a very niche market and Konami really want this series to be mainstream again.” He wouldn’t rule out a new 2D title completely, though it wouldn’t come from MercurySteam.

You can find Cox’s full comments below.

I think those days are gone, yes. I think hardcore gamers would love to play another 2D Castlevania, but the reality is that it’s a very niche market and Konami really want this series to be mainstream again.

We took this direction in order to reach that bigger audience, otherwise we would have carried on with the 2D approach. That’s not to say I don’t think there will ever be another 2D game in the series, it might happen but just not from MercurySteam.

When you look at the future on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, I don’t think people want to play 2D games on those consoles. Core gamers may still want something like that, but there’s an expectation among the wider public for big, epic games.

Thanks to joclo for the tip.

Cox, shut the Heck up, many 2D games of CV got better scores than LoS or Los 2.

    • madbads

but did they earned as much money? that’s whats all about.. and its sad, but no more good games.

      • Mark

Why would Konami keep making games that didn’t earn as much?

For nerd cred from the people not buying them?

        • Lamesy Watercorn

Yes. There are these concepts called “customer goodwill” and “reputation” that companies must maintain parallel to massive amounts of cash. Companies stop having market appeal when nobody likes or respects them.

          • Mark

If only companies could pay the bills with goodwill…

      • Jandkas

Then by your argument the only games developers should make is games like Call of Duty.

        • Carlos

Unfortunately that’s why they keep making COD, because they make money. The video game market is a business and it’s all about making money in the end. Whether we like it or not COD will be around until they stop making money.

          • Jandkas

Just because something is inevitable doesn’t mean it should continue or be permissible.

          • Carlos

I never said it should, but it’s going to happen whether we like it or not. Unless you can make the millions of COD player stop buying the games they’re going to keep making them.

          • No, that’s only the definition of inevitable. What is so wrong and awful about mainstream shooters that they shouldn’t be permitted?

If you don’t like a game, don’t buy it. That’s the end of your relationship right there. You can:
            A) Buy
            B) Don’t Buy
            C) Whine and Don’t Buy
            D) Shut up and make your own games

What shouldn’t be permitted is someone being this snobby. The profit-driven industry brought you every game you ever bought and loved.

        • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

They tried that. But they arent Call of Duty. So it doesnt work.

          *points at Resident Evil 6*

        • Niko Santos Tolentino

Tell me which sells best COD or CV franchise? They make games that sells best not because they like that game. I mean you can make the games you want but the thing is who’s gonna finance it?

      • Teknopathetic.

From Syphony of the night (which had over a million sales) to Order of Eccelsia, the metroidvania games had a steady 380,000 sold each

Mirror of Fate and LoS2 both sold less than half of that at around 130,000 each

  • LordDisco

Well, if they want to keep making mediocre or bad games, then they can be my guest. Otherwise, I’m awaiting that Castlevania game that is in the same vain as Shadow Complex and the new Strider. There is definitely a market for that genre, and MercurySteam needs to get their head out of the gutter and see that.

  • He made a 2d castlevania and it sucked

  • superphillip32

Perhaps MercurySteam’s lack of sales success with Mirror of Fate is a culprit to why he feels this way. Then again, that game wasn’t your typical 2D Castlevania, nor was it a game anyone really asked for. Fans like me want 2D sprites and a Metroid-style castle to explore, or a return to the classic formula.

    • Blitz

I don’t understand why they can’t just make a side-scrolling Castlevania in the style of Symphony of the Night with 3D models. New Super Mario Bros controls just like a 2D Mario game and uses 3D environments.

      • Luis R Rodriguez

Rondo of Blood PSP version has 3D models in a 2D style game. Also Mirror of Fate had that same feeling the prolem with MoF was the stupid story and that your character was used only for a portion of that story, also the castle being almost empty.

        • FutureFox

And that all three characters operated in virtually the same way just different skins.

    • DarthSiphilice

sorry, i loved both Lords of shadows, wish they woulda made another, id even like a metroid like that it would be epic.

  • PC Elitist

They are in for the cash and cash only 1st.. No one gives a damn , its really obvious in what this guy said.. bring it mainstream so more kids buy , hardcore fans , deal with it.. the end.

  • sonicfan1373

That is a sad way of looking at it…but I cannot disagree.

I do not know if it is just me, but I feel Konami has really faded away during the last decade. They made some of my favourite games in the 1990s along with many other games that others enjoyed. However, they do not seem to do any development anymore, it seems like the few games that they do publish now days are all outsourced to companies like MercurySteam.

  • Symphony of the Night and the subsequent handheld games is where the series peaked. Just another salty developer trying to make older fans feel bad for not liking his little disaster on the 3DS. -_-

    • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

Third parties not making the games people want to buy. Tsk tsk.

Tis why Nintendo has no third party support unless you make games that appeal to their main audience

      • My point exactly, if people don’t want to buy it, it will fail to catch on. He of all people should know that since he wants to talk sales. I feel that same way about JRPGs on Microsoft platforms, every fanbase is different.

      • Teknopathetic.

I would disagree, its just that Nintendo has a very very high bar when it comes to third parties, after which they buy up the company and make it a part of them. Game Freak, Retro Studios and Hal Laboratory spring to mind.

Compare to Mercurysystem, who had not even made a full game before Konami gave them the rights to Castlevania

  • OlimacFTW

God, how I hate that guy, He ruined Castlevania, and still, He is so arrogant to say that his 3d atrocities are better. How I miss Iga.

  • I guess I won’t be playing any new Castlevania games then. I hated pretty much everything about Lords of Shadow, and could barely stomach the demo of Mirror of Fate.

Back to replaying the classics, I suppose.

    • DarthSiphilice

      lmfao wow people these days…

      • I know, right? People are so ridiculous, going around and replying to posts someone made eight months ago.

  • Ray Anthony Rivera

I hate the Lord of Shadows series. It’s nothing compared to the roster of enemies of the previous Castlevania titles and the exploration inside the castle. The only enemy I can remember in LOS is the giant spider and the stupid chupacabra.

  • chrisredfield31

He’s wrong. A properly designed Castlevania game can make it back to mainstream, the problem is that there’s no talent out there at the moment that can do that, and even then, Konami will never back it due to how risky it is.

    • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

      Ganbarion and Pandora’s Tower exists

  • ehead

This is a pretty sad outlook. Why can’t they develop both? 2D Castlevania similar to Soma’s titles for handhelds and 3D games on consoles. Probably outsource the 2D titles to competent devs… I don’t know, maybe Cellar Door Games?

  • Mark

Hes 100% correct, ppl QQ’ing in here need to accept it

    • superphillip32

Thanks for backing up your opinion maturely with some kind of information.

      • Mark

Sales, you should check them out brah

    • Teknopathetic.

His games sold less than half of the Metroidvania’s separate sales…
Tell me how hes right again?

      • Longinus

where do you get those figures?? I’ve tried to look and found this: http://www.playstationlifestyle.net/2010/11/23/1-million-castlevania-lords-of-shadow-copies-shipped/
1M copies shipped. Perhaps it did not sell that, but certainly more than you claim. Believe me, if only 130K were sold, it would have been a bomb. Clearly the game did better than what you say, otherwise they would not have made a sequel.

I am 31 years old, so I’ve through all the ups and downs. I guess you are around my age or at least played quite a few castlevania. We have to learn to accept change!

  • Mark

    Jesus christ

  • Branden Thomas

Hey here’s a better idea. Make a new IP if it’s not possible to maintain core elements of a series or just respect the series for what it is and understand that Castlevania doesn’t have to be THAT money maker. I mean heck doesn’t Konami make enough money off Pro Evo Soccer and Metal Gear Solid?

I can’t even imagine what will happen to the inevitable Contra reboot. It’s going to be Bionic Commando all over again.

  • Blitz

What is their obsession with changing the core dynamics of their games to fit mainstream trends? This is how we got RE6. It was COD with Zombies without regenerating health.

This is exactly the kind of attitude the put Capcom in the financial position they’re in.

  • Windego

So we’re now blaming the 2D era being over for a bad game’s failure? This guy is almost like the guy who makes the FFXIII games who is somehow convinced Lightning is the perfect woman.

    • RyB

Damn I had a laugh. Good show.

  • bearmon2010

No, I still enjoyed Castlevania 2D as much as LoS and LoS 2. They do not know what they are talking about.

A 3D for Casltevania is a no no!

  • Aiddon

and the Metroidvania’s will go down in history as groundbreaking classics while your boring, me-too titles will be a footnote at best. You’re nothing more than a hack, Cox, and you always will be

  • ronin4life

“When you look at the future on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One”
…well there’s your problem right there. To bad that’s the only future we have to look toward, since that is the one the industry has decided to limit itself to…

    • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

SNES and Genesis days were truly the golden age of gaming.

Shit if third parties were more like Activision is with the diversity of their lineup and they sold their games to various demographics they’d get somewhere but they dont.

  • Pedro Gomez

Shoot this man, please. He’s implying that 2D games can’t be big, epic games, direct this man to Rayman Legends and Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze please…of course PS4 and Xbox One gamers don’t want good games, they want Hollywood-budget movies with a button press here and there. Konami, we need a new, 2D Castlevania with hand-drawn sprites, maybe in an oil painting style?

    • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

We need Ganbarion to make a 3D Castlevania

      • Yeah, of all the 80s hit franchises, Castlevania is easily the least creative as far as intellectual property. Whips? Dracula? Castles? Gameloft made a Castlevania clone for DS and not a single lawsuit was filed. There’s nothing truly special about the Castlevania label.

        • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

Practically every konami game is a ripoff(in the most literal sense)

Seriously these guys put this out

Their 3DS output is beyond terrible

          • FutureFox

            ^ That’s genuinely very sad.

Which is a shame because I think of when Silent Hill first came on the scene. They actually innovated the Survival Horror experience by adding the weird horror movie camera work. Plus the game had a nice twisted story element.

  • stealth20k

Oh? so is that why DKR a 2d game is getting great scores and your sequel sucks?

    • Laer_HeiSeiRyuu

Hey now. No need to be snippy.

  • They wanted Castlevania to be mainstream so bad that they went on and ripped off another mainstream game’s formula. Nice way to start Castlevania’s new chapter. *sarcasm*

  • Bruno

David Cox is just trying to keep his job. The truth is he’s a liar. The best selling game in the franchise is Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, none of the 3D games comes even close.

  • blindexecutioner

    Too bad…

  • AtrusHB

  • Alexander Enos

“the reality is that it’s a very niche market and Konami really want this series to be mainstream again.”
So they want it to be mediocre garbage?

  • Andrew Cannady

Obviously he doesn’t know the Castlevania fan base. You can’t Copy God Of War game mechanics almost exactly and call it Castlevania. Lords of Shadows 1 is a horrible game and Mirror of Fate. I can’t comment on Lord of Shadows 2 but my buddy said it sucked, at least they made a PC version which should happen for Ground Zeros. God of War is it’s own game and better then LOS, I boycotted mirror of fate because no vita version. I was considering PC version until I saw the reviews. MercurySteam should stay away from Castlevania and I noticed the new game is being outsold by Max Payne 3 which came out years ago. It’s not even in the top 50 in the US or UK. Sad Ground Zeroes (#2 in the top #50 sales wise) huge disappointment and now they’re destroying Castlevania. Ground Zeroes I’m 88% and only played the game a little more than two hours, I beat the first mission in 20 minutes, I use to love Konami and wait for their games to come out but they’re going downhill fast, I waited so long for ground zeroes and got a huge disappointment. Please boycott LOS2.

  • Billy Plante

For anybody interested, here is a link to Heart Forth, Alicia. It is an indie game with a kickstarter page. I don’t know all the details but supposedly this guy made this entire game by himself over the course of 7 years. His inspiration? Symphony of the Night. Don’t know if it’s going to be any good or not, but i’m sure it’s worth looking into.

    • Damn. I’d buy this if there were a Wii U stretch goal. Looks done already.

  • Teknopathetic.

As I said before, the LOS line of Castlevania games are earning them less than half of what the metroidvania games did

  • Adan Net

Lords of Shadows ruined Castlevania’s story completely ¡¡¡¡¡¡
2D or 3D are not important.

They’ve destroyed Castlevania series with this abomination.

  • jznlv

I hope he is wrong, the God of War games er I mean “Castlevania LoS ” games are ok but aren’t half as fun as the 2d games. They don’t feel like Castlevania at all to me. They can keep making them but I will only buy the 2d versions, no matter where they offer them, well except xbox lol. Vita , 3ds , PS4 , WiiU, NX or PC.I would consider getting an xbox of it was the only way to play them but I doubt they would consider that route considering how poorly Xbox 1 has sold and how japanese games always sell poorly on xbox. Please PLEASE PLEASE make a ton of 2D Castlevanias, my wife amd I are waiting !

  • Pfft this guy is nuts… The LOS model while not bad, it was never as good as the Castlevania games of old. Actually nowadays the only chance of revival this franchise has lies in the past.
