Not gonna lie, I find it kinda sad that Persona has outshined the original series in terms of total sales despite being 9 years younger than it’s counterpart.

    • It’s the characters.
Starting with Persona 3 when they went with a completely different route having modern school setting and anime type of story with characters people can love. Helped it.
One of main key to getting more sales in a JRPG is the characters.

    • theFooFighter

It’s the more casual friendly series. That’s not a knock against it at all I love persona but it’s just easier to get into. Its the same reason Mario and Zelda will always beat out Metroid or even at it’s peak dark souls only does like 2 or 3 million. Hardcore doesn’t do crazy numbers

    • Sinara Centeno

The atmosfere in Megami Tensey is much more dark, psycodelic and bizarre. The gameplay and tematics is faraway more hardcore.
The gameplay and navigation of Persona is easier. Is more friendly, colorful and “emo”. young people identify better.
      So, Megami has less public.

Kind of surprised phantasy star has not sold more. Those games were pretty popular for a while.

  • I wish they could provide a better breakdown of the numbers.

Darn i was hoping to get Sonic mania numbers

  • Pachirisu

i’m surprised by how little some of these series have sold!

like for example, the Puyo Puyo series has sold more than the Persona/SMT/EO series combined!

  • Princess_Eevee9

Jeez Puyo Puyo Tetris destroying just about everything not named Sonic in sales!! Annnd wooo those very average sales for that Volcaloid franchise, for unexplained reasons I dislike it so much. Very weird as I love Dance Dance Revolution and Vocal games, must be the fandom or the over-saturation that I see for it? Would also be nice to see a more extensive breakdown of these Sales numbers for the Regions.

  • hi v3.0

Those numbers are much more lower than I thought

  • Addy

Dang, with a number like that, it’s as if nobody’s even heard of Etrian Odyssey.

Considering the fan bases (Persona, Etrian Odyssey), I thought some of these series sold a lot more than they did.

Makes me realize Monster Hunter at about ~40mil total sales and pokemon ~279mil are, relatively, pretty/quite large franchises.

On the other hand, with Sonic selling so many copies (i.e. it being THE money maker), I’m surprised they haven’t nailed down a formula that the majority of the Sonic fan base can be happy with. Maybe it’s just the vocal minority, or perhaps the loyal majority still buy the games regardless to maintain those high numbers. *shrugs* I know Sonic has a lot going for him, but most of the great stuff were the classics imo (like the original Archie sonic comics! So good)
