Glasses-Free 3D Gaming System Comes Packed with Features at Suggested Retail Price of $249.99

NEW YORK–(BUSINESS WIRE)– The company that changed the world of video games with touch-screen gaming in 2004 and motion-controlled gaming in 2006 now pioneers the next dimensional shift. On March 27, Nintendo introduces portable entertainment in 3D – without the need for special glasses. The Nintendo 3DS™ system will be available in either Cosmo Black or Aqua Blue, and will have a suggested retail price of $249.99. Pricing outside the United States will be established by the local markets, but offer similar consumer value.

“Nintendo 3DS is a category of one – the experience simply doesn’t exist anywhere else,” said Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime. “You have to see Nintendo 3DS to believe it. And it’s like nothing you’ve ever seen before.”

It’s been a long time coming, but Nintendo has finally announced the release date and price for the 3DS. The system will arrive on March 27 for $249.99. A direct yen conversion put the system at around $300 in the U.S., so this price is quite a bit cheaper. Even more information is expected to be revealed about the 3DS today, so stay tuned.

Potential 3DS owners can rest easy now. Nintendo confirmed today that the handheld will feature one friend code. This is by far the most simple set up for friend codes for a Nintendo system ever. Both the DS and Wii required users to input separate codes for each game.

Nintendo does appear to be taking a more serious approach to online and the 3DS. The company revealed today that the system will feature different colors for the notification light. When the light turns orange, the system is indicating that a friend is online. Other colors include red (low battery) and green (StreetPass activity).

Nintendo announced the 3DS launch colors in North America just a few moments ago. Similar to what is being offered in Europe, two colors will be available: Aqua Blue and Cosmo Black. Stay tuned for more 3DS details as the rest of the day unfolds.
