A 3DS version of Donkey Kong Country Returns wasn’t something that Nintendo had always planned. Interestingly, the idea came about when Monster Games conducted an experiment following the completion of the Wii game.
Nintendo’s Hiro Yamada revealed to ONM:
Actually, we hadn’t planned for this from the beginning. We felt that the DKCR graphics matched well with 3DS, but the hardware specs were very different. Because of this, we spoke with Retro who also said that it would be difficult to do a straight port. The truth is, it all started when Monster Games ran it as an experiment after DKCR was completed.

Inafune says Kaio: King of Pirates is still in development, trilogy still planned, appealing to the west

Kaio: King of Pirates is an odd case. Despite having announced the game a year and a half ago, relatively little has been shared by developer Comcept and publisher Marvelous AQL.
But don’t work: Kaio is still coming. Comcept CEO Keiji Inafune told Siliconera that development is “going well”, though because a manga and anime are also involved, “we can’t just show the game.”
“Marvelous AQL is the publisher and there are plans to make a manga and anime. At Comcept, we’re producing the game and it’s going well. There is a total effort with all of these collaborators for the Kaio intellectual property, so we can’t just show the game. It’s basically not our choice.”
