3DS

It’s been almost two decades since Super Mario World saw its first release in Japan. In recent years, the title landed on the Game Boy Advance and the Wii’s Virtual Console as well. Might we see the game on the 3DS, too? Or how about a true sequel? Shigeru Miyamoto teased the possibility of bringing a Super Mario World project to Nintendo’s upcoming portable in a recent interview, sharing a few ideas that could work with 3D.

“Well you know actually a lot of ideas that I would have liked to have implemented in Super Mario World have come to life in later Mario games since then. But the question gets me thinking about what fun it would be to create a Super Mario World game on the Nintendo 3DS and how we could use the depth and the sense of distance offered by 3D visuals on the world map and on the maps in that game, so that you have Bullet Bills flying at you from a distance and popping up off the screen.”

Following his response, Miyamoto was asked immediately if that was a small hint. He said:

“I don’t know… Maybe!”

– Around July 2008, Sakurai and Iwata went out together to eat
– Iwata told Sakurai Nintendo was working on a new handheld
– At the time, many people inside Nintendo didn’t know about the 3DS
– It wasn’t clear at the time if it would end up producing 3D graphics, but Sakurai know it was capable of better visuals
– Iwata wanted Sakurai to give him opinions about the 3DS and to make a game for it
– Iwata usually didn’t ask for input about new hardcore
– Iwata wanted an original game, didn’t ask for a specific genre
– Sora had no dev. team since the Smash Bros. developers were contracted or temp employees from Nintendo/other companies, only really had two people
– Iwata contacted Sakurai because he appreciated his directing skills

This information comes from THQ Core Games VP Danny Bilson…

“Nintendo really wants to launch with a very balanced portfolio. They really don’t want it to feel like a kiddie platform. They were very clear: they really wanted Saints Row on it. Now, we know how those go sometimes: sure, the first party wants it, but is it really going to work? The interesting thing about the game is we were already making it. We were already making it as our Xbox Live game and in 3D also. It’s designed for 3D already. So the 3DS version is an incremental cost. It’s not a big startup cost. Anything in a transmedia play has a column called marketing in it. It’s also a marketing tool. So how does that game model for us? I believe it will do great, especially if Nintendo is going to go mature and really do a big mature campaign on it. It’s a killer game. It’s got all the weird humor of Saints Row, and also its existence is part of the marketing plan to sell Saints Row 3. Also, all these games have hooks where, if you play it, it unlocks things in Saints Row 3. If you play Saints Row 3, it will unlock things in the 3DS game or the Xbox Live game. I don’t know if I was clear about that, but all of our extension properties all connect and unlock things in each other.”

We’ve heard a few times now that Nintendo is looking to change their image with the 3DS. With franchises like Saints Row and Resident Evil, it won’t be as easy to claim that Nintendo’s portable isn’t producing games for the hardcore audience.

“The 3DS is going to be very interesting. We haven’t even achieved mass market penetration with 3D in home entertainment so it’s very exciting to see if the 3DS can jump the gun and make its way into homes. I can see de Blob working extremely well with 3D. It’s a colour-based game so if you can picture 3D paint splats and cartoon action jumping out at you from the screen, that’s a great indication of how de Blob might benefit from 3D.” – Nick Hagger, series executive producer

de Blob 2 is definitely coming to the 3DS. It was announced by THQ and it was on Nintendo’s list of games as well! So we shouldn’t have to wait too long to see what the series is like in 3D. The only thing is, based on Hagger’s comments, it doesn’t sound like he’s too involved with that title. I suppose that’s because he’s already working on the next game for Wii.

Sakurai on how long he’s been waiting to bring Pit back…

“So, the revival of Kid Icarus actually began in Smash Brothers. We brought him back for Smash Brothers and I personally did all that design work. We made a decision to upgrade and re-envision what the character was like with some more current trappings. From that time I certainly had an interest in the franchise. Now this time around, the project actually began with an original game idea, and the match seem to be a good one for the mythology and the character Kid Icarus. So it just so happened that the game idea and the franchise matched in the project then start it from there.”

Sakurai on what idea led to the creation of a standalone game…

“So the original idea was a game in which you had air combat and ground combat and then end up with a boss battle. It was that kind of flow, sort of a hybrid of a shooting game and a third-person game with those two things. Now the idea is that Pit as an angel who can’t fly and provides this scenario where [the goddess] Palutena grants him the ability to fly for just five minutes. That seem like a good match with this gameplay idea, and in trying it out in initial testing phases, it seemed to work pretty well. I definitely knew that there was this very strong demand for revival of the franchise overseas and I thought that this was an idea that was crystallized and would satisfy that demand.”

Ugh…This is starting to get extremely annoying. You’d think Nintendo would be able to comment on a remark made by their own North American president! I guess we’re back to square one…The 3DS will launch before the end of March 2011, and that’s all we know for sure.
