3DS piracy has started to become a hot topic as of late. With rumors circulating that hackers are coming to close to breaking the system open, such a result could impact the market significantly.

Piracy was a monstrous problem on the DS. It eventually became so troublesome that publishers were hesitant to release games for the portable, and would sometimes pass on titles completely – like original IP.

DreamRift co-founder Peter Ong discussed the negative impacts of DS piracy on both his studio and publishers’ mindsets while speaking with Gamasutra:

Footage leaked out yesterday of a Renegade Kid-made Crash Bandicoot DS demo. Did you know that the studio made the prototype in just two weeks? That is the case, according to Jools Watsham. Renegade Kid put fourteen days of work into the project… and then never touched it again.

Nintendo’s response to the 2012 NPD report is in. The company sold 460,000 consoles in the US last month and a total of 890,000 units after 41 days. Wii U has generated over $300 million in the US, according to Nintendo and NPD.

Below you’ll find Nintendo’s complete response, which contains data for New Super Mario Bros. U, and numerous data for the 3DS, Wii, and DS.

With more than 460,000 units sold in December, Wii U has now sold nearly 890,000 units in the United States after only 41 days on the market, according to the NPD Group. To date, Wii U hardware sales have generated more than $300 million in the U.S. alone; Wii hardware had generated just more than $270 million at the same point in its lifecycle.

“While the Wii launch established new benchmarks in the United States, Wii U has surpassed its predecessor in perhaps the most important category: revenue generation,” said Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. “The demand for the Deluxe SKU, which was essentially sold out at retail this holiday, and the strong attach rate of New Super Mario Bros. U, shows that we have the value and the games to drive momentum in 2013. We look forward to offering great new experiences and bringing smiles to millions of new faces throughout the year.”

Quite a number Crash Bandicoot games have been cancelled over the past few years. Studios have also worked on a few prototypes – including Mutant Mudds maker Renegade Kid.

Citing an anonymous source close to Activision, NintendoWorldReport writes that Renegade Kid created a demo around 2008 or 2009. A video featuring footage from the prototype is posted above.

LEGO Marvel Super Heroes is featured in this month’s Game Informer as the magazine’s cover story. Warner Bros. seems to be keeping some aspects under wraps, as actual gameplay details remain a bit vague and screenshots weren’t included.

In any case, you can learn more about LEGO Marvel Super Heroes below. There’s information to be read about the game’s roster and areas, New York City hub, and more.

Once Renegade Kid wrapped up development on Dementium II, the studio was searching for a new DS project to take on. Finding a title that publishers would take interest in wasn’t so easy, however.

And thus Renegade Kid turned to sales data. While the studio knew a particular genre wouldn’t necessarily lead to success, according to Renegade Kid’s Jools Watsham, “it at least shows you where audiences have existed”, suggesting “at least suggests they may still exist.”

A couple of genres popped out – racing titles and virtual pet games. Based on its research, Renegade Kid did decide to make a concept for a pet title at one point. Ultimately the pitch wasn’t picked up.

Watsham wrote on his blog:

“Believe it or not, we did actually create a concept for a virtual pet game, but never found a home for it. That’s probably a good thing.”

This is just one tidbit from Watsham’s new blog post, which gives insight into Renegade Kid’s . You can view the full write-up here.
