Wii U

The Wii and 3DS were both accompanied with press events in North America and Europe prior to launch. With Wii U, though, it seems that there will other be a gathering in New York City.

An official statement from Nintendo reads that an event hasn’t been planned for Europe. NOE will have to announce its own launch information at some point, though the details may come through nothing more than a press release.

The statement in full:

“We are not planning a specific European event like NOA, however we are looking to put the new Wii U console in the hands of as many people across Europe as possible and we will be in contact with news of our UK communications plan in the near future.”

Nintendo of America should be sharing news about the Wii U launch on September 13. President Reggie Fils-Aime will be on hand to reveal “more about how the Wii U will change the future of gaming and entertainment.”

EA is bringing Mass Effect 3 to the Wii U. FIFA 13 and Madden NFL 13 are also planned. The question is, what is EA planning for the console beyond these three games?

Executive vice president Patrick Soderlund gave a cryptic answer in an interview with CVG.

Soderlund said that the company “doesn’t make ports at all anymore”. There is Mass Effect 3, but I suppose he doesn’t count that game as a port since it’s a BioWare title and a third-party is handling the porting process.

He explained that EA “will always try to take an approach about what is unique for that platform.” Soderlund also noted how the “Wii U has many unique capabilities so you have to embrace the unique elements of the platform otherwise there’s not much point doing it at all.”

“Well I would say EA doesn’t make ports at all anymore. We try to make games that are ideal for each platform as much as possible. Obviously for PS3 and Xbox 360 the systems are similar, so we cross-develop. But we will always try to take an approach about what is unique for that platform. Wii U has many unique capabilities so you have to embrace the unique elements of the platform otherwise there’s not much point doing it at all. There is no general rule for developing a game. We custom tailor for each one, so everything is a bit chaotic, but it’s worth it.”

GameStop has listed a few Wii U accessories on its website. Aside from the “Universal Afterglow Wireless Headset” that works with pretty much all consoles, details on the peripherals are unknown.

The retailer is listing a November 6 release date for most of the products. For the time being, this hasn’t been confirmed.

According to the LinkedIn profile of games director Armando Soto, WayForward has a new multiplatform title in the works. An unannounced project is on the way to the Wii U, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360.

This doesn’t seem to be Mighty Switch Force HD. I also wouldn’t bet any money on the possibility of it being a new Shantae.

Guess we’ll just have to wait this one out…

Pixel Entertainment has sent us some information clarifying the development of Starbeast and the studio’s other projects.

Starbeast is said to be in a “very early stage in development.” Its slow creation process allowed the team “to fine tune every detail.”

At one point, the game was indeed coming to Wii. But when Pixel Entertainment heard about Wii U, the team decided to switch Starbeast to the new console.

The information we posted over the weekend is outdated. It’s “very different now, due to the extra time.”

Pixel put the project on hold in January. This allowed for the development of a simpler, unannounced 3DS eShop game. Once this new title is done – and we should be hearing about it within a month – development will switch back to Starbeast and a formal announcement will be made before year’s end.
