ESRB rates Transformers Prime for Wii U

This isn’t the first time we’re hearing about Transformers Prime: The Game and Wii U. Activision’s own site listed Wii U as one of the game’s platforms. It has since been removed, but that finding, coupled with this ESRB rating, could mean that an announcement will be made soon.

No yearly F1 releases on Wii U, audience is a factor
Posted on 12 years ago by Brian(@NE_Brian) in News, Wii, Wii U | 0 comments
F1 games have been coming out yearly on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC. It doesn’t sound like the Wii U will be receiving the same treatment, however.
Game director Paul Jeal feels that F1 Race Stars may be a more appropriate title to bring to the console. Following this, Codemasters will consider a strategy different from its usual annual games on Wii U.
“We have the license for a bit longer now so we can do a bit more forward planning. Rod [Cousens] – our CEO who’s here [at gamescom] – he’s constantly thinking, ‘What about this or what about that?’, so he needs to put a business case for it. I definitely think it would be something a little more suited to Race Stars first. Let them do the hard work of getting it working on the tech first!”
Jeal said the following when asked whether that would be due to the audience:
“I think so, yeah. I also think it’s looking at the Wii SKU that we did. It did really well but there’s still questions with sales numbers… whether it is something that annually we could revisit year-on-year [and] would sell the same number of units year on year. [For] something like football, you need the newest content and there’s lots of changes, but with F1 the changes with the teams and drivers are really quite minimal, so instantly you’re quite stretched for new content. I think when you bring this over to the Wii where the audience is perhaps a bit more more casual and they’re less likely to buy it year-on-year, you have to look at a slightly different strategy.”
Iwata on the need for a social component in single-player, Miiverse made for “social graph”, more

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has sounded off on social gaming for Wii U and the Miiverse.
Iwata feels that gaming is now in an era “where even a single-player game experience can have a social component”. For Miiverse, Nintendo wants to have “a gaming platform as the place to create that ‘social graph’ for folks who are in gaming circles”. He also hopes it’ll allow those who are playing alone to not actually feel like they’re playing by themselves.
There’s lots of commentary below from Iwata concerning social gaming and Miiverse – be sure to check it out.

Also, if you’re wondering why I haven’t put this podcast on iTunes, it’s because I’m a firm believer in the concept that the first ten of anything you make (such as this podcast) are destined to be crap. So we’re gonna do ten “test” episodes via archive.org and then I’ll get them subscribe-able on iTunes for you guys after they get good! : D

Adam Sessler has doubts about Wii U, thinks it could be delayed to 2013
Posted on 12 years ago by Brian(@NE_Brian) in News, Wii U | 0 comments
You can add Adam Sessler to the long list of Wii U doubters.
Sessler, previously a co-host of G4’s X-Play, is starting to wonder if the console will actually launch this year and isn’t sure if it will “provide the needed stimulation to the industry.”
He wrote on Twitter today:
“…Also….increasing confident that the WiiU will a) not come out this year. b)will not provide the needed stimulation to the industry. I will probably eat my words on one of those points. By then I hope to have a video platform to apologize on. Selling console this Nov. with a price north of Borderlands, AC3, Halo 4 and CoD combined and announcing in Sept?”
It’s very unlikely at this point that Nintendo will delay the launch of Wii U to 2013. With the Wii, Nintendo announced the console’s release date and price in September, and it ended up hitting store shelves in November. This pattern will likely hold true for the Wii U.
Nintendo of Europe apparently not holding Wii U event
Posted on 12 years ago by Brian(@NE_Brian) in News, Wii U | 0 comments
The Wii and 3DS were both accompanied with press events in North America and Europe prior to launch. With Wii U, though, it seems that there will other be a gathering in New York City.
An official statement from Nintendo reads that an event hasn’t been planned for Europe. NOE will have to announce its own launch information at some point, though the details may come through nothing more than a press release.
The statement in full:
“We are not planning a specific European event like NOA, however we are looking to put the new Wii U console in the hands of as many people across Europe as possible and we will be in contact with news of our UK communications plan in the near future.”
Nintendo of America should be sharing news about the Wii U launch on September 13. President Reggie Fils-Aime will be on hand to reveal “more about how the Wii U will change the future of gaming and entertainment.”
EA wants to take advantage of Wii U’s “unique capabilities”
Posted on 12 years ago by Brian(@NE_Brian) in News, Wii U | 0 comments
EA is bringing Mass Effect 3 to the Wii U. FIFA 13 and Madden NFL 13 are also planned. The question is, what is EA planning for the console beyond these three games?
Executive vice president Patrick Soderlund gave a cryptic answer in an interview with CVG.
Soderlund said that the company “doesn’t make ports at all anymore”. There is Mass Effect 3, but I suppose he doesn’t count that game as a port since it’s a BioWare title and a third-party is handling the porting process.
He explained that EA “will always try to take an approach about what is unique for that platform.” Soderlund also noted how the “Wii U has many unique capabilities so you have to embrace the unique elements of the platform otherwise there’s not much point doing it at all.”
“Well I would say EA doesn’t make ports at all anymore. We try to make games that are ideal for each platform as much as possible. Obviously for PS3 and Xbox 360 the systems are similar, so we cross-develop. But we will always try to take an approach about what is unique for that platform. Wii U has many unique capabilities so you have to embrace the unique elements of the platform otherwise there’s not much point doing it at all. There is no general rule for developing a game. We custom tailor for each one, so everything is a bit chaotic, but it’s worth it.”
