First, Natsume’s Vice President of Operations Graham Markay was asked if Harvest Moon 64 will be released on the Virtual Console…

“It (Harvest Moon 64) will not [be released on the Virtual Console]. It will not. And it’s not from lack of trying. Unfortunately, the code of the game is not… it’s not an easy transfer. It would be really time-consuming and long, and we’ve looked into it, and we’ve tried to see if there’s any way around certain things, but the conversion to virtual console, it’s just… I shouldn’t say it’s never going to come out, but there’s just a really, really, very small chance that it would ever come out. Which is unfortunate because we know that for a lot of dedicated, die-hard fans, that’s their favorite.”

Markay also shared his thoughts on the 3DS…

“It looks exciting. I mean, from everybody’s aspect whether it’s television manufacturers, Sony, Nintendo, it seems like 3D is the next thing. Speaking for myself and the company, yeah, it’s exciting. Speaking for myself personally, I wear glasses. So putting glasses on top of glasses is always a bit… when I take my kids to see a 3D movie, they enjoy it a little bit more than me because I always tend to not see it as well as they do because of the glasses. But it’s exciting; we are a supporter of the 3DS.”

I really had no idea that it could be so technology difficult to bring titles like Harvest Moon 64 to the Virtual Console. I wonder if similar issues are holding up other releases that could land on the service.

Thanks to Robert for the tip!

FIFA, Need for Speed, Medal of Honor and The Sims Among Top Franchises to Reveal Deep Innovation and New Experiences for Consumers

Guildford, UK, August 13, 2010 – Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ:ERTS) today announced plans for gamescom 2010 in Cologne. EA will showcase a powerful slate of titles representing a selection of leading franchises across the company’s Games, Sports and Play Labels. Media and consumers are invited for hands on experience with a whole host of innovative game play that highlights the company’s focus on delivering fewer, better games and building direct to consumer digital offerings.

“Gamescom has grown to become the largest show for interactive entertainment, and offers a unique chance for us to engage directly with consumers, retailers and media at one event,” said Jens Uwe Intat, Senior Vice President and General Manager for EA Publishing in Europe. “Our line up demonstrates the intense focus we have on building quality games with deep innovation for our consumers, and it’s great to see the industry coming together to create such a milestone event in Europe”.

As many gamers know, id Software co-founder John Carmack delivered a keynote today at QuakeCon 2010. For Nintendo fans, the most interesting  – albeit disappointing – news came towards the end of the Q&A session.

In terms of Wii development, it doesn’t sound like id Software will be making a game for the system anytime soon. Carmack told his team not too long ago that they could bring Rage from the iPhone to Nintendo’s home console – where it was originally born – but unfortunately, the company is skittish about the system. It was explained that a first-person shooter tanked on the Wii, which is probably a contributing factor to id Software’s overall disinterest in the console.

The possibility of id Software creating another title on the DS also isn’t likely. The company’s only piece of software for the handheld, Orcs and Elves, was released in 2007 and received a mostly positive critical reception. However, Carmack believes EA lost money on the game. One reason for that may be, as was stated, that it lacked elements to make it truly unique. Elaborating on the DS further, Carmack said id Software doesn’t possess enough focus at the moment to work with the portable once more.
