Renegade Kid co-founder Jools Watsham has published a second blog post focusing on 3DS piracy.

Watsham started out by looking to clarify his thoughts, as “some people have taken my comments as an attack on Nintendo, the 3DS, and the players.” But Watsham noted: “Nothing could be further from the truth.”

Watsham went on:

I understand that piracy is always going to exist, and that every market has some form of piracy. I accept that piracy will exist on the 3DS. The question is how much is it affecting the market? Some markets maintain a healthy business environment alongside piracy. I believe this is due to many factors, not least of which is the service provided in that market.

I don’t think there is a solution to piracy. It will always exist in some form. We just need to make sure the price of games is affordable. We need to make it easy to buy and own games. The availability and access player’s have to their games needs to be at least as easy and convenient as the ROM sites make it to illegally download a game file. Ideally, it should be better. If the player’s only question is, “buy or not buy?”, and not dealing with issues such as, “how do I transfer ownership of this game to my new system?” then we’ll have minimized the appeal of piracy.

Ultimately, Watsham noted that Renegade Kid’s “support of the 3DS platform couldn’t be stronger.” The studio has games planned for Nintendo’s portable into 2014.

The official Pokemon website has been updated with a notice that an important announcement is set for January 8 – next Tuesday. We first heard that big news had been teased at the end of a Pokemon Black/White 2 video airing in Japan.

Of course, the page doesn’t give any clues about the nature of the announcement. Most folks are hoping for a new game reveal though.

Does the Wii U’s early 2013 lineup seem a bit… light? More on that later, but Nintendo UK’s James Honeywell would tell you otherwise.

Honeywell highlighted Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor’s Edge, and Sing Party while speaking about the Q1 2013 lineup. He also said: “I’m sure E3 will be another great show and there will be lots of fantastic titles to come.”

“As well as a strong launch line up, we’ve also got a really strong Q1. We’ve got a lot of fantastic titles – Monster Hunter, Ninja Gaiden, Sing Party, fantastic titles for everyone. And beyond – I’m sure E3 will be another great show and there will be lots of fantastic titles to come.”

In terms of content purchased from the Wii U eShop, having a Nintendo Network ID is pointless. At least for now, games downloaded from the store aren’t tied in to your account. They’re instead locked to the system itself… so it would appear.

One NeoGAF user, “DSN2K”, claims to have received access to a number of free titles after receiving a previously used console. That’s in spite of the fact that a new account was apparently set up on the same Wii U, and DSN2K says the system was wiped before he received access to it. He was able to download digital games such as Trine 2: Director’s Cut and Nano Assault Neo without paying a cent.

There are likely two possibilities here – either the console wasn’t completely, 100% wiped, or all Wii U eShop content is indeed tied to the hardware itself.

Unchained Blades producer Hiroyuki Abe would naturally like to see the game’s sequel in English. But like most localizations, it all comes down to fan interest and sales.

Abe hinted that “the possibility of Exxiv coming over grows quite a bit” if the original game sells well:

“The original game and concept for Unchained Blades was well received. We were eager to create a sequel based on the same concept that people seemed to enjoy. In terms of Exxiv, coming over is something we will still have to evaluate. If American gamers buy a lot of Unchained Blades from Xseed, the possibility of Exxiv coming over grows quite a bit!”

There are a couple of ways to purchase Unchained Blades. You can download the 3DS eShop version which launched today, or buy it from the PlayStation Network.

Sterne Agee analyst Arvind Bhatia has offered some insight into sales of the Wii U. Agee noted that GameStop sales this holiday fell below expectations in terms of both hardware and software. Available stock at the retailer is apparently “abundant.”

It should come as no surprise that the Wii U Deluxe Set is outperforming the Basic model. Thanks to the “better value” provided by the Deluxe Set, consumers have been more than willing to shell out the extra $50.

Discussing Wii U software specifically, Bhatia said the attach rate at GameStop is “low”.

Bhatia wrapped up with the following comment:

“Our conclusion is the Nintendo Wii U launch has been slightly disappointing.”

Paper Mario: Sticker Star could have offered a series of mini-games in Bowser’s Castle. However, the team didn’t have enough time to implement the content.

Producer Kensuke Tanabe told ONM:

“In Bowser’s Castle, we were planning on having the player complete a number of different mini-games as they went along, but unfortunately we had to cut this because we didn’t have time. I’m sure these mini-games would have been very silly and fun, so that was a bit of a shame.”

Co-director Naohiko Aoyama added that the mini-games would have required “a lot of effort into making events to really show off their uniqueness.”

“If we had, then we would certainly have had to put a lot of effort into making events to really show off their uniqueness.”

Renegade Kid co-founder Jools Watsham has opened up on 3DS piracy concerns amid reports that hackers are starting to have their way with the portable.

As many people know, piracy became an issue on the DS. Dementium: The Ward sold 100,000 copies around the world, but Watsham feels that piracy may have affected the sequel’s performance. Only 50,000 units of Dementium II were sold.

With the 3DS, Watsham noted that Renegade Kid “will have no choice but to stop supporting the platform with new games” if similar issues occur.

Watsham said:

For whatever reason, SimCity has been pulled from the Wii Shop Channel. The game has simply disappeared. Nintendo didn’t include a message on the store about its removal, and right now it’s completely unknown as to why this has occurred.
