Site updates

The main site and forum are now 100% integrated. What does this mean for you? Here’s a rundown:

1) You must register for the forum in order to comment

I believe I deleted around 100 spam comments today. Unfortunately, that’s been happening on a regular basis. I’m tired of cleaning up the spam, and I’m sure you guys are tired of seeing bots. That’s one of the reason why I’m making registration mandatory to participate in discussion. I also think this is a great opportunity to promote the forum, as well as maintain consistency with the main site. If you make a comment on a news item, it will show up on the forums! And vise versa.

2) Registration is easy

Registration should literally take less than a minute. Once you sign up, you simply need to activate your account via email. That should take less than 20 seconds! If you’re having any trouble at all, send us an email and I’ll try to help you out.

3) We have a new forum skin

Our forum actually looks “Nintendo-y!” Gone is the generic, default phpbb style. In its place is something that is much more visually appealing, and is full of Mario goodness. So far you guy seem to be very pleased with it, so I’m pleased as well! Make sure to take a look at it here.

4) Staying logged in

This is something a lot of you have asked for, and I’ve done a ton of testing to make sure it works over the past few days. You should be able to stay logged in as long as you select the “Log me on automatically each visit” option. Of course, make sure cookies are enabled as well. This may need a bit more testing, but we’ll see what happens.

5) The sidebar

You can login to the main site/forum straight from the sidebar. After doing so, you’ll be able to see your avatar, any new messages you receive, your ranking, and new posts.

That’s all I can think of for now, though I’m probably forgetting a few things. Feel free to send us an email or comment/post on the forum if you see any errors or have any questions!

Just wanted to take a moment to inform everyone that the site will be undergoing maintence tomorrow as well as Sunday. I’m going to try and accomplish anything I can over the next two days, though I honestly have no idea how much that will be. At the very least, before Sunday is over, the site and main forum will be completely linked. So, again, you’ll need to register to comment on the main site (which means you’ll also be registered for our forum!). I’ll go over all of that information again once everything is complete.

Keeping this on the front page overnight!

Forum integration: So… I’m really leaning towards making logging in to the forum mandatory in order to comment. Registering on the forum should take less than a minute, and I’m experimenting with ways for users to stay logged in. For one reason or another, spam comments on the main site have gone up a great deal, but, as I said a few days ago, I think that this new setting could cut down on that. Granted this totally blows up in our faces, then I’ll consider reverting back to the old settings. If you guys are on board with this, I’d like to make the switch this weekend. If you have anything else to say about this, feel free to do so in the comments section.

New forum skin: We’ve been using the default phpBB skin for awhile now, and we desperately need a change. Fortunately, we’re going to be implementing a new layout very shortly, and I think you guys will like it. I was actually going to put it up today, but I encountered a critical error that I need to take care of before the style goes live.

Broken things: Jeez, I have a ton to fix. First, I’m aware that we’re having an issue with our RSS feed (thanks for sending in the emails about that). However, I really need to work on a few other things first, such as the new forum skin and polls. I promise to look into the RSS problem soon!

I’d still like to hear what you guys think about the options below, so keep the comments coming!

After many hours of tinkering around with settings and files, I have successfully managed to integrate the main site and forum. I’ve actually wanted to do this for years – probably since I first started NE, in fact. Since my PHP and database knowledge is very limited (Java and C++ is my expertise, not Internet coding), linking the two wasn’t possible until I discovered a much easier way of accomplishing my goal (without worrying about coding too much).

So, here’s the deal. Every single post made on Nintendo Everything will now appear on the forum (with a link to the news post) on the new “Nintendo Everything news” sub-board. Additionally, you now only need one login for the main site and forum. If you’ve already signed up on the forum, you’re good to go. There’s one thing I need your input on, though. We have two options:

1) Disable guest commenting: You would need to register on the forum in order to comment on the main site, but again, you would only need just that one username – no additional login for the main site. If you’re logged in on the forum, you’re logged in on the main site (and vise versa). Likewise, if you post on the forum, it’ll appear on the main site (and again, vise versa!). I know a lot of you don’t have any sort of account (as a large majority of you are guest posters), but if you guys agree, this is something I’d really, really like to do. On the other hand, if this is something you’re not up for, I’ll hold off on it since I don’t want the discussion on the main site to die down! Basically, if you guys are willing to register for just one account here, then we can go ahead with this.

2) Enable guest commenting: If we go with this option, comments posted on the main site and forum will be split. So, let’s say I made a comment on this story. As you’ll be able to see, that comment will not appear as a reply on the forum. Clearly, this isn’t an ideal situation. If the first option is chosen, then everything will be in sync. The only benefit I can think of with this option is that you won’t have to log in at all.

The main reason why I’ve linked the main site and forum is because it makes things easier for everyone in terms of logins, and I’ve wanted to help promote the forum more as well as increase the discussion there (it’s kind of hidden, at the moment).

After we decide between the above options, I need to look into fixing a couple of things (such as the poll…) and getting a new design for the forum (it’s too bland and ugly!). But really, what you guys say is critical. I’m practically begging for feedback! I’m not doing anything until I hear from at least a few of you. Oh, and no – You don’t need to register just yet (unless you want to start posting on the forums right now). For the moment, commenting hasn’t changed.

Just a note for anyone looking to gather up and play Game Night tonight, we are going to play Goldeneye 007 again this week! It’s going to be in around 2 hours from when this post goes live, and if you want to play, make sure you post your friend codes as comments on this post!

If you can’t post them here, that’s okay- show up anyway and we’ll certainly let you play! But if you do read this post and you know you want to play, please make sure you post your name and Friend Code for the game here! In addition, you should add my code as well. It’s 3063-5411-7080.

Post here if you add me, and make sure you post your code, regardless of if you played and gave it to me last week or not.

Thanks!

~Austin

As you may have noticed, the posts we’ve added to the site have started to slow down. Of course, that’s because tomorrow is Thanksgiving! We’ll most likely see less and less news starting tomorrow, and that’ll last until Monday. It’s possible that we’ll still see a few notices from Europe, and I’m sure there’ll be some news from Japan as well. On the whole, though, I’m not expecting too much.

I’ll still be around to cover things for the most part, but I’ll be treating the next couple of days somewhat like a weekend. I’m not entirely sure what my schedule will be like exactly, so we’ll see. Hopefully you guys will spend some time with your family/friends! I’ll be heading off to see the new Harry Potter film at some point (I know, that’s not really something most people do on Thanksgiving), watching a few football games (go Jets!), and having a nice, quiet dinner.

In any case, don’t eat too much turkey, and enjoy your Thanksgiving if you’re celebrating!

Last night, we here at NintendoEverything.com all gathered together with some of you readers for what has become known unofficially as “Nintendo Game Night”, and we were very excited to be able to play the recently released 007: Goldeneye for Wii. We loaded the game up and hopped online, but I began noticing some things that have bogged us down for a while now in terms of the way we organize the whole event. I’m looking to fix them, because Game Nights are already incredibly fun, but I’m fixing to make them even better for myself and for all of you guys by implementing one very important guideline:

Get your friend codes up before Game Night actually starts

Whether it be via e-mail, comments, or on the forum, it would streamline everything so much if we can get your friend codes before the night actually comes. Basically if you want to play, all you have to do is post your friend code on the Game Night post (which will be going up tomorrow evening), in the Game Night thread (which will be going up tomorrow evening) or e-mail it to me at [email protected]

If you already submitted your friend code for a particular game, you don’t need to submit it again, but it would be incredibly helpful if you could post/comment/e-mail me that you do indeed want to play. That way I can just post up a list of all the people who’ll be playing, and everyone can add them without trouble!

This means instead of “starting” at 7 and not playing until 7:30, we’ll actually be able to hop in and go with no trouble. If you have any questions about the process, comment on this story or e-mail me! Of course, you’re still free to just drop in and give us your code in the IRC, but we’d really appreciate if you could let us know beforehand!

Thanks to all of you for playing, and we sincerely look forward to you playing with us this weekend! I’ll post up the exact time/what we’re playing tomorrow.

We are playing the newly released GoldenEye, tonight! Hop on in, give us your friend code (or whatever this game uses…) and let’s play some Bond!

The last game night we did was the one where we all played The Conduit and Ronin won a copy of Goldeneye 007, but this weekend we’ll be bringing it back into the house.

This upcoming Saturday, November 20th, the staff and readers from the site will gather up at 6PM CST (7PM EST, 4PM PST) to play a plethora of rounds of everyone’s (new) favorite game, Goldeneye 007!.

Now, I’m not going to lie, I don’t have the game yet, but I’ll be buying it on Saturday. I will say, however, that if there is an option to, we’re playing with health packs and not regenerating health. Sorry, CoD aficionados, regenerating health is lame. 😉

See you all on Saturday!

You know, I think this is the best contest we’ve had up to this point. We had some very nice user participation for the comment entries, a fantastic Game Night, and some impressive features/articles. So far, we’ve only announced one winner, but I’m pleased to share the complete results of the contest right now!

1) Game Night: Winner – Ronin
2) Comments: Winner – keyz
3) Article: Winner – Adrian M

It was a very, very tough choice to pick out the article winner. Austin and I were definitely having a difficult time deciding on which entry we liked best, but in the end, we went with Adrian’s feature – You can check his winning entry below. A special shoutout to Lynod – We were impressed with his article as well. Perhaps we can think of some sort of consolation prize to give him!

The copies of GoldenEye 007 arrived here just a couple of days ago, so once I have everyone’s address, I’ll be able to ship out all of the games to our winners. I hope you guys enjoyed the contest, and hopefully we’ll have similar events on NE in the future!
