Splatoon 2: Octo Expansion

The Inkling World Still Evolving

Could you tell us a little more about the concept for the Octo Expansion music?

Minegishi: There’s challenge stage music and then the new songs by the Chirpy Chips. As the challenge stages are short and rely on trial and error, I had to think about what would be the best fit. Because there is already going to be a tendency for stress there, I wanted it to be something that flowed and players would not get sick of easily. I composed the new Chirpy Chips songs with the intention that they would have a different appeal to those that have come before.

The composition of the new Chirpy Chips songs seems a little more refined this time around.

Minegishi: Yes, it is a lot sharper this time and there are mellow parts, as well as poppy ones, so overall it covers quite a large range.

Finally, do you have anything to say to our readers?

Satou: It’d be nice to take a break now until the one year anniversary of the Octo Expansion, but the truth is that we’ll continue to update the game. I’m happy that so many people are playing our games and we’re going to continue developing to meet their expectations.

Amano: In Splatoon 2 I was responsible for Salmon Run and from that I went straight into development for the Octo Expansion, so for now I can take a short break. The updates for Salmon Run may be a little slow moving, but I definitely think we can do something more with the mode. Please wait just a little longer!

Inoue: This has kind of ended up as an announcement, but we have a collaboration with Tower Records to release a book which charts the history of Splatoon from the beginning to this expansion. Even though there have only been three years since the first game, and the history is relatively fresh, I think that freshness means you can see the history far more clearly and in more detail. Inside the book are both illustrations and insider stories, so please take a look.

Minegishi: I’m very grateful to the players who have supported both Splatoon 1 and 2, and I would like them to continue enjoying the games. At the same time, I would also like those who have not played before, but have an interest in the game, to give it a try.

Nogami: We already announced this at E3, but from July onwards updates to the game will continue and all of us here feel there is still a lot to do. We are already preparing an announcement for the next Splatfest, and we’re trying hard to surprise players with new ways to play. We think it’s amazing that, not only on a global stage like E3, but also on an individual level, players from all over the world are being connected through our games. I’m also grateful for the collaboration with the people at JAMSTEC (Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology) and would like us to continue working hard together in the future. Oh, and let’s not forget the 4th Splatoon Koshien!
