Hyper Light Drifter

Hyper Light Drifter was thought to be coming to Wii U since the project’s early days. But in February, developer Heart Machine said that the eShop release “was in limbo”. We had some hope in July, though unfortunately, Hyper Light Machine has ultimately been cancelled on Wii U.

At the end of the day, there are technical obstacles, as YoYo Games and Nintendo haven’t been able to come to an agreement with the GameMaker engine involved. A Wii U version would have therefore needed to have been remade from the ground up, and it sounds like a ton of work would have been required.

You can listen to the full update from Heart Machine below.

Back in February, Heart Machine said that the Wii U version of Hyper Light Drifter was “in limbo”. It seemed like the game could end up being cancelled on Nintendo’s console, but there’s now a bit of encouraging news to report. In a Kickstarter update posted last week, Heart Machine said of Hyper Light Drifter on Wii U: “We are finalizing last details on this port by next month, and will have more info then.”

That definitely sounds promising, though we don’t have confirmation on the situation just yet. Regardless of what happens, we’ll let you know.

The Wii U version of Hyper Light Drifter is “currently in limbo,” according to Heart Machine. Today’s update was shared as part of a new post over on Kickstarter.

During Hyper Light Drifter’s early days, Heart Machine “had information about our engine”. The team was hoping this would result in a relatively simply port to Nintendo’s console. But now, Heart Machine says Hyper Light Drifter is in jeopardy of missing out on Wii U due to “ongoing internal contractual issues beyond our control between the platform holder and engine developer”.

More footage of Hyper Light Drifter has come in via a video from GameSpot. We’ve posted it below.

A new trailer is in for Heart Machine’s Hyper Light Drifter, which is slated for the Wii U eShop and additional platforms. Give it a look below.

Hyper Light Drifter has already been confirmed for release on the Wii U eShop but now we are learning that we might not see a release until 2016.

In a recent interview with TiC Podcast Team, Alex Preston the games creator has some updates on the progress of the game and when we can expect a release.

We have not yet announced the release date. We have only said 2015 for PC first. Consoles take some time so, for example, Xbox One has a certification process that you have to go through. There are hundreds of things on that list you have to make sure are good to go on that system. It takes time. We’re a small team to do that. We want to get it out the door on PC first and we will give ourselves the correct amount of time after. Sometimes it takes months, sometimes it takes much longer depending on the certification process. It’s all about getting it on the platform as quickly as we can, but doing it the right way. That stuff can be really intense and expensive.
We’re trying to get it all out as quickly as possible. We can’t rush the certification process. We don’t want to release a broken game. We don’t want to release a bad game. We’ll take the time that we need to. Those are the realities of it and those are the goals.

As far as pricing for the upcoming title Alex stated:

As far as price goes, we’re stating that it’s $19.99 so it’s a big game. The pre-order price starting out was $15 way back when, but since we had enough funding and a larger team, it’s become a much bigger experience. We’ve put years of work into it at this point. It’s well-worth that amount, if not more.
