Data collected by market researcher App Annie indicates that Pokemon GO has become the fastest mobile game to reach $600 million in revenue. That was done between July and the end of September, or 90 days.

To compare, Candy Crush Saga needed more than 200 days to hit $600 million. Puzzle & Dragons was next at 400 days, followed by Clash of Clans at more than 500 days.

App Annie also reveals that the total time spent in Pokemon GO was almost as much as the next 19 games combined. Additionally, it comprised 45 percent of the time spent in Android games in the third quarter, as opposed to 55 percent for the next 19 titles.

App Annie went on to praise Pokemon GO for managing to convert a ton of a player’s non-mobile time to mobile time. Instead of taking time away from other mobile apps, users were more inclined to spend more time overall on their devices.

According to the Financial Times, Japan’s Financial Services Agency is considering the regulation of Pokemon GO’s PokeCoins. The in-game currency would be under the jurisdiction of the Payment Services Act if this were to happen. Niantic would also need to disclose the balance of unused in-game currency held by users in March and September every year. Assuming the total surpassed more than 10 million yen, the company would need deposit as much as 50 percent of the unused currency balance in yen in a Japanese bank account as security.

The Financial Times mentions that FSA and Niantic are talking about the situation currently. Analysts say the decision could impact other games in Japan involving purchasable in-game currency.

Pokemon GO now features some new functionality with the Pokemon GO Plus device. Those who search for Pokemon are now able to choose from different notification modes.

Scanning for both PokeStops or Pokemon simultaneously is the default setting as always if you want to try to catch as many Pokemon and collect as many PokeBalls as you can. But as Niantic points out, you can also individually enable/disable each of these notifications based on your preference. Also, when walking with a Buddy Pokemon, you can choose not to receive notifications – instead by taking note of the distance of your walks. And last but not least, Pokemon GO Plus will remain paired with the main app if you choose to use it while interacting with Pokemon or Gyms.

Pokemon GO players have come across a new change within the mobile app. It seems that, as of a couple of days ago, the “Sightings” nearby list turns off, and Pokemon do not spawn when going above a certain high speed.

Forbes asked Niantic for a comment about the situation, but no response has been provided thus far. It’s currently unclear if this is a bug or an intended change. However, we do know that Niantic made it so Pokemon GO warns players about using the app while driving with an update released a few months ago.

Pokemon GO will soon be receiving a new update. On iOS, version 1.11.2 will be deployed soon while Android users can expect version 0.41.2.

The upcoming update introduces a few new things. This includes the catch bonus, updated gym training, and egg/incubator screens.

Head past the break for the official notice and full patch notes from Niantic.

SurveyMoney published a new report about Pokemon GO. The game’s retention rate is explored in-depth, with the company ultimately concluding that “it’s quite respectable; it’s competitive with those of other top-performing games.” That comes in contrast to some of the things we’ve been hearing about Pokemon GO’s decline.

It’s true that Pokemon GO’s player retention rate is dropping, but it stacks up favorably when compared to other top mobile titles. SurveyMonkey even proclaims that Niantic’s mobile release is “performing very much like a typical top mobile game.”

It’s illustrated further with the following comparison to Clash of Clans, which has fewer active users but a similar retention rate:

– Clash of Clans currently has ~3.85 million weekly active users (WAU). With a weekly retention rate of 75% (a weekly churn rate of 25%), Clash loses ~960 thousand players from week to week.
– Pokemon GO has 15.4 million weekly active users. With a weekly retention rate of 75%, it loses ~3.9 million users from week to week.

Since some of the initial hype surrounding Pokemon GO has died down and casual players are leaving, that leaves the app to more loyal users. SurveyMonkey says “it wouldn’t be surprising for the weekly retention rate to level off, mostly ending its current gradual decline.” Also, given Pokemon GO’s retention at the moment, it wouldn’t be a surprise if the game ended up as “one of the most widely-used smartphone games in the U.S. for a long time to come.”

Yesterday, Niantic gave a sneak peek at a feature on the way to Pokemon GO. An update coming soon will make it easier to catch rare Pokemon.

Niantic also has plans to improve the training gameplay, as the company revealed in a blog update today. Here’s what players can look forward to:

“As we continue to make improvements to Pokémon GO, we have made an enhancement to the Gym experience for Trainers of all levels. In an upcoming version of Pokémon GO, when training at a friendly Gym, Trainers will be able to bring six Pokémon to battle instead of one. In addition, the CP of the Pokémon you are training against may be temporarily adjusted lower during your training session to generally match your Pokémon’s battle capabilities.

No matter what your level, you can now have an impact on your team’s Gym. Walk with your Buddy Pokémon to that nearby landmark and show your Team Leader that you can battle with the best!”

Niantic hasn’t said when this will be going live, but it shouldn’t be too far in the future. We’ll let you know when we hear anything.

Niantic is giving Pokemon GO players a sneak peek of a new feature on the way. Sometime soon, functionality will be introduced “which grants a catch bonus when you earn medals based on catching certain types of Pokemon”.

With bonuses, you’ll have a better chance of capturing Pokemon with a related type. As one example, catching Fire-type Pokemon will be easier as you reach a higher tier for the Kindler Medal. Tiers can be increased by catching many Pokemon of the same type.

Here’s the full explanation and some screenshots of the upcoming feature:

Pokemon GO has been delivered to another slew of countries. The lineup includes: Kenya, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Rwanda, Seychelles, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, Chad, Gabon, Sao Tome and Principe, Egypt, Morocco, Botswana, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Benin, Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Cote d’Ivoire, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mauritania, Niger, Sierra Leone, Togo.

Last Thursday, Niantic made Pokemon GO available in five new countries. That was followed a day later by its launch in six more territories.
