Zelda: Ocarina of Time clip provides first look at portals prototype
Former Nintendo developer Giles Goddard has provided a first look at a prototype for The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time that originally featured portals.
Earlier this year, we heard from Goddard that there was some experimentation very early on with an idea involving Hyrule Castle. Similar to Super Mario 64, players would access different parts of the map through these portals. The mechanic was ultimately scrapped and Nintendo ended up going with a more open design in the end as players visit areas by traveling through Hyrule Field.
Goddard wasn’t initially keen on actually showing what the portals prototype was like in Zelda: Ocarina of Time given that the game is Nintendo’s property, but it looks like something changed since he first spoke about the topic earlier this year. On Twitter yesterday, he posted a short video in .GIF form that offers up a look at the gameplay mechanic in action:

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time initially launched for the N64 in 1998. In 2011, Nintendo released an updated version of the classic title for 3DS. The N64 original also just made it to Switch as part of the new Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack service.
