Capcom shares interesting insight into Ace Attorney – Dual Destinies, Ace Attorney 6

Capcom is also working on Ace Attorney 6 based on fan feedback from Dual Destinies, such as how the game was too easy and wanting to see more of Apollo. Opinions based on the Tokyo Game Show demo were mostly saying that it’s interesting, but the Spirit Vision system was too hard, partly because the time taken to solve it was too long. Capcom intends to improve the hints in future versions.

How they implemented the Spirit Vision system here was very similar to when they were making the Logic Chess system in Ace Attorney Investigations 2. The reason why they inserted Spirit Vision was to show events unfolding from victim’s point-of-view, and how the person’s feelings could be really the strongest evidence in any murder case. However, there could be a possibility that what the victim felt wouldn’t explain everything, as he/she could be also tricked into a misunderstanding.

Action and movement in Ace Attorney 6 will apparently be even better than in Dual Destinies. Leifa’s dance in the TGS demo is said to be an example of this.

In Dual Destinies, Phoenix was portrayed more as the main character, while Apollo was more like just an important story axis. By making Ace Attorney 6 set in two separate countries, both Phoenix and Apollo should now receive an equal spotlight as the main characters in each countries.

Nintendo Dream actually ended up asking if they would release two separate versions of the game – think Ace Attorney 6 Red and Ace Attorney 6 Blue. Eshiro and Yamazaki almost agreed to that, but suddenly countered by saying if they were to do such a thing, they need to make even more episodes in each version. Pursuing this direction could take about four more years to complete.

Also said in the interview is that all 3D models in Ace Attorney 6 are being reworked from scratch so that they are on par with the brand-new characters’ 3D models. They also have better facial expressions.

Ace Attorney 6 will take place right after Dual Destinies in the timeline. Not only Phoenix, but Apollo and Athena will also still be there as a result.

Eshiro thinks the Ace Attorney heroine Leifa is a really good character. When Fuse made her design, he had almost no objections. He only wondered about “What’s that thing on her face? Is that a tattoo or cosmetics?,” to which the answer is a tattoo. Leifa being an opponent to Phoenix despite being labeled as a heroine will offer something fresh in this series. Typically, heroines stand right next to the protagonist.

The Nintendo Dream interviewer noticed that both the kingdom and Leifa’s name have Kurain in it. Eshiro guessed he must have been expecting “something”, but if his expectations are to be betrayed that would be interesting. He could be expecting some connection to the Kurain Village in Ace Attorney 1-3.

There’s also talk about the flow of the scenario writing. First, Yamazaki determines the general direction. Then it’s brushed up through discussions with other writers. Each episode has its own writer in charge. Ideas for the episodes are talked about with each respective writers to solidify them, creating an imagery of writing the story in tandem.

Yamazaki and Eshiro left some final messages to close out the interview. Yamazaki mentioned that as of this interview, Ace Attorney 6 is undergoing finishing touches. It will be the biggest compilation to the Ace Attorney series, even more so than Dual Destinies in terms of both techniques and characters. Eshiro added that Capcom keeps increasing the quality of the game, and continues raising the hurdle while brushing it up. They’re doing new experiments by stacking various techniques. When the team is fully satisfied, they’ll be able to deliver a new Ace Attorney to everyone. They’re aiming for the series’ common concept of ‘Betraying customer [expectations] in a good way’. Finally, Capcom would like to release this in early timings within this year, so Eshiro asks fans to please wait for more information.
