Nintendo 3DS Grandstand Will Keep Travelers’ Spirits Soaring

REDMOND, Wash.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Nintendo of America and JetBlue are teaming up to give air travelers some hands-on time with the new Nintendo 3DS™ system, which lets users enjoy video games and other entertainment in 3D without the need for special glasses. Passengers who visit JetBlue’s award-winning Terminal 5 in New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport between April 22 and May 30 will have access to an interactive Nintendo 3DS grandstand where they can play games, enjoy 3D photos and videos, and participate in daily prize giveaways. Reflecting the two companies’ shared commitment to delighting consumers, Nintendo and JetBlue aim to deliver a new dimension of entertainment for travelers of all kinds.

JetBlue’s Terminal 5 at JFK is already known as a special location, featuring more than 40 food and retail outlets that provide a fun, relaxing atmosphere for busy travelers between flights. The addition of the Nintendo 3DS grandstand will give visitors a chance to sample a variety of games, including Pilotwings Resort™, Steel Diver™, nintendogs™ + cats, Super Street Fighter® IV 3D Edition from Capcom, LEGO® Star Wars® III: The Clone Wars™ from LucasArts™, Asphalt™ 3D from Ubisoft and Madden NFL Football from EA SPORTS. Yesterday, French site Game Blog posted a short snippet from an interview they conducted with Shigeru Miyamoto, which confirmed that Nintendo is trying their best to release Mario 3DS this year. The full interview has now been posted on the site, and the folks on NeoGAF were kind enough to translate the important bits. Miyamoto shared some very interesting information (including a comment on Project Cafe), so I recommend you check out the details below.

– Miyamoto says he’s working on a new Zelda, a new Mario, Mario Kart 3DS, and a new Pikmin
– Nintendo making new AR Games for the 3DS
– Miyamoto didn’t say if these new AR Games will be retail releases or downloadable
– Miyamoto reconfirmed that Nintendo intends to celebrate Zelda’s 25th anniversary just like they did for Mario
– Many products/merchandising for Zelda’s anniversary (unclear if this means games or CD/books)
– Miyamoto on Project Cafe rumors: Nintendo always working on new hardware and “where there’s smoke there’s fire”, but “you shouldn’t believe everything you read [on the internet]”.
– Miyamoto considering entrusting the younger teams with traditional characters such as Mario and Zelda, so he can get more time to work for himself

Nintendo’s E3 2011 conference won’t be taking place until June 7, so we’re going to have to put up with Wii 2 rumors for about another and a half. Having said that, it’s time for another “be cautious” post.

The first round of Wii 2 speculation was fair. The rumors were coming from sources such as Game Informer, EDGE, and IGN. Personally, I consider these publications to be reputable and I would hope that they would be writing their articles after careful consideration of the information that was provided to them.

Lately, though, a handful of extra rumors have come from, frankly, no-name sites, and I am very doubtful that they truly have any (reliable) insider contacts. I understand that what I said isn’t entirely fair, but it’s generally best to trust sources that have actually established themselves in the industry and have some credibility. Even over the past 24 hours or so, I’ve seen a handful of articles written which claim that the author has reliable sources, yet that alone isn’t enough to convince me that a story is legitimate.

So I’ll be filtering the types of rumors on Nintendo Everything that I consider to be potentially true and are published by trusted sources in the gaming scene. I hope you guys are also cautious when reading up on speculation not found on the site.

Oh, and about Retro Studios hiring new staff – please don’t make too much of that. Companies are always interesting in bringing in new talent, and considering Donkey Kong Country Returns wrapped up in November, it is only logical that Retro is adding staff and will be working on a new title – if they already haven’t that is.

Is Maximilian and the Rise of the Mutant Mudds seeing a revival? Well, if the game’s newly opened site and Twitter account are any indication, the answer to that question is a resounding yes.

The title appeared to be all but cancelled due to Renegade Kid not receiving enough positive responses on their blog. But the new site shows a 2D Max character in sprite form, along with the following message:

“Hi, this is Max. I found a mysterious website. Please check it out here: http://www.mutantmudds.com. It seems as though I have been reduced to my purest form: pixels. I find this to be somewhat alarming while also refreshing.”

Perhaps Renegade Kid is planning on giving Maximilian and the Rise of the Mutant Mudds another shot, albeit in another style. It isn’t even entirely clear if we’ll still see Max in a game, but the chances are stronger than they were a few months ago. Hopefully we’ll receive some answers sooner rather than later.

Ready for more Wii 2 rumors? I hope so, since IGN’s Jim Reilly just posted more speculation on his Twitter account. According to his messages, the console’s controller will have dual analog sticks and the system itself is capable of streaming content. However, it isn’t clear if that includes full games, mini-games, or just applications. Reilly also claims that both first and third-party games will make an appearance at the show, though it’s anyones guess if they’ll be playable or not.

“Dual analog sticks on the controller. Can stream game content from the console. Not sure if it’ll be full games, mini-games, or apps. There will be first and third party ‘Wii 2’ games at E3. No clue if they’ll be playable.”

This information comes from EEDAR analyst Jesse Divnich…

“Most video game companies withhold their biggest announcements until E3 and if Nintendo chooses to announce a Wii price drop before their E3 press conference, they must have something much bigger to announce. There are very few announcements that would eclipse a hardware price cut.”

This information comes from M2 Research analyst Billy Pidgeon…

“Wii is certainly due for a price cut, which would be good for Nintendo and for retailers. A Q2 price cut announcement would typically be an E3 event, so scheduling a cut before E3 would clear the boards for another, bigger announcement. A new console would be pretty exciting, but it’s a lot riskier for a vendor with a large active installed base to launch next generation and keep last generation’s base active while the other vendors are still building out. Next generation timing and strategy is going to be interesting.”

Let’s not get too excited, though. Remember, any sort of price cut has not been confirmed in the slightest. In fact, Michael Pachter of Wedbush Securities believes that the rumor is fake:

“There is no way that anyone outside of Nintendo Japan would know about this until print ads have to be submitted for retailers, probably at most three weeks prior to the cut. I don’t believe that the source is right. With that said, I think a cut in September is likely, unless Microsoft cuts earlier. Nintendo will not lead price cutting, Wii is still selling pretty well (close to 1 million a month), so why cut profits until sales drop below 500,000 a month? I don’t see it.”

After a week long embargo from Captivate 2011, Capcom will finally be sharing a few announcements tomorrow. It looks like there are at least three reveals coming up. Other than Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D (see the poster above), we don’t know if there will be any other news for Nintendo fans. One announcement will probably be Dragon’s Dogma (which doesn’t look like it will be for a Nintendo system at this point), which leaves us with two other possibilities. However, due to the pixelation in the posters, fans will have no choice but to guess as to what Capcom has in store.

The embargo officially ends at 11 AM EDT, but I suggest tuning in early to the site tomorrow. Also be sure to check out our sister site for PlayStation 3/Xbox 360 news including Resident Evil: Raccoon City, Asura’s Wrath, and Street Fighter x Tekken.

You never know if things will start leaking early! Just don’t get your hopes up that there will be a Monster Hunter 3DS announcement…

This is actually some pretty big news! According to the Recording Academy itself, video games will now be included in the following categories at the Grammy Awards:

The Music for Visual Media (Motion, Television, Video Game Music, or Other Visual Media)

Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media (Motion, Television, Video Game Music, or Other Visual Media)

Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media (Motion, Television, Video Game Music, or Other Visual Media)

Best Song Written for Visual Media (Motion, Television, Video Game Music, or Other Visual Media)

This comes after Christopher Tin won the first ever Grammy for a video game last year for this track, which is the theme song to Civilization V.
