Nintendo 100th anniversary

A company reaching its 100th anniversary is a massive milestone, but it turns out that day came and went without much fanfare within Nintendo.

Takaya Imamura, who is known for his work on the character designs for games such as Star Fox and F-Zero, revealed that Nintendo never actually celebrated that anniversary. It seems this was largely due to former president Hiroshi Yamauchi. Yamauchi had a certain mindset and believed in particular philosophies, so the 100th anniversary was treated just like any other day.

Nintendo Super Mario supermarket

Nintendo typically comes out on top regarding legal battles, but the company was recently unsuccessful in a dispute involving a supermarket with the Super Mario name.

A man named Don Mario has been running the shop in San Ramón, Costa Rica for decades. Recently though, his son Charlito attempted to renew the trademark that was already registered. That’s when Nintendo stepped in, claiming that it owns the Super Mario rights. It’s true that it belongs to Nintendo in many different areas, but supermarkets are an exception.

Mario movie steelbook limited edition

The Super Mario Bros. Movie is far from a new release, but a new steelbook version is actually coming from Walmart very soon. Those interested in picking it up will be able to do so on March 4, 2025.

This new steelbook retailer is apparently a Walmart exclusive and it’s described as a limited edition. You’ll obviously get the movie itself, which is offered with 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and a digital copy. No new features appear to be included.

Back in the day, Kirby fans used to talk about how the character appeared angry – but that applies only to the west. If you looked at key art or boxart for the series’ various games in Japan, Kirby was often seen smiling and looked happier. It was overseas where things were different. So what was going on there?

Polygon caught up with a couple of former Nintendo of America staffers to get insight into the situation. Leslie Swan, the company’s former localization manager, first spoke about cultural differences between the United States and Japan and how “tween and teen boys tend to be drawn to tougher characters” in the west. However, it also seems that Nintendo didn’t exactly believe they were making Kirby angry – rather the character was depicting a look in which he’s “determined against all odds.”

While there have been no official announcement as of yet, it’s looking like Astral Chain director Takahisa Taura could be gone from PlatinumGames.

Speculation first began after Taura, along with others who had worked at the studio, removed the “PG” from their handles on social media. That was certainly a sign, but not enough to say anything definitive. On top of that though, fans have now spotted that Taura’s Facebook page lists “Eel Game Studio”.

Earthblade cancelled

Earthblade, which was being created by Celeste developer Extremely OK Games, has now been cancelled. The studio provided an update on its official website today.

The decision to cancel Earthblade was made in December. A few things factored in here, including a split with Pedro Medeiros over “the IP rights of Celeste,” according to Extremely OK Games’ Maddy Thorson. While a resolution was met, Medeiros has moved on from the team and is hard at work on his game Neverway.
