General Nintendo

Pier Solar and the Great Architects has been confirmed for Wii U. We don’t know when it’s coming, but the team is hard at work on the project.

One of the game’s developers, Gwénaël “Fonzie” Godde, discussed what it’s like working with the Wii U system:

“Although the main game logic in modern platforms share the same code, some features are exclusive to each platforms. Wii U has many interesting features and we want to be able to make good use of them. Hopefully, it will be a great surprise.”

Pier Solar will make use of the GamePad’s various features, according to Tulio Goncalves:

“Yes of course. Wii U feels like a ‘TV version’ of Nintendo DS, and as we’ve seen in the handheld, many possibilities can be explored. However, we’ve got to be careful when designing those functionalities. As everyone knows, one of the great features of Wii U is the ability to switch gameplay from the TV to the Wii U controller screen; in that case it has to behave just like as if you were playing with the regular controller, so those functions have to be non-vital functions to the game.”

Pier Solar is heading to Wii U… but could we ever see it on the 3DS eShop? Goncalves and Fonzie commented on the possibility:

Tulio: The 3DS resolution doesn’t favor the original resolution and aspect of the SD version of Pier Solar. If a port gets made it will be the HD version scaled to 3DS resolution.

Fonzie: Either way, having PS HD in 3DS would be great. However, first we must focus on all the platforms that we announced on Kickstarter. We have lots of motivation but we’re still a small dev team!

And last but not least, Fonzie discussed WaterMelon’s future projects:

“We are working on a few other projects at the moment through the Magical Game Factory. We got one Mega Drive beat ’em up and RPG project and one Super Nintendo action-adventure project, as well as few surprises!”

There hasn’t been a new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game since 2009. But now that Activision has acquired rights to make titles based on the IP, we could be seeing new content soon. The publisher signed a multi-year deal with Nickelodeon to develop and distribute new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles games around the world.

Nickelodeon Consumer Products’ Sherice Torres commented:

“Activision is a leader in the gaming industry and we are honored to have them as the global video game partner for our new hit series Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. We are confident that these upcoming games will take gamers through interactive environments and action-packed adventures that truly capture the essence, tone and exciting elements of the Turtles.

The official news announcement is posted below.

I’m amazed that the cast actually has a pretty decent knowledge/appreciation of video games – more on the classic side, but there’s nothing wrong with that! And Sarah Silverman sounds like a pretty big GoldenEye fan…

Zelda is back… in book form!

Author: Patrick

Full disclosure: I’m probably the only writer for Nintendo Everything who doesn’t really consider myself a fan of the Zelda series. My opinion of every Zelda game tends to dramatically vary, but I think the series’ art is the one area that the games consistently excel at. And so when it was announced that Dark Horse would be publishing a combination of art and history book to celebrate the Zelda series, of course I jumped at the chance to review it. The Legend of Zelda: Hyrule Historia sure makes a great first impression. Even the regular edition Hyrule Historia has a hardcover and with over 250 pages it’s quite a heavy book. It promises plenty of fully translated information about the series from the specifics of the Zelda timeline to the shape and density of Tingle’s chest hair, but we won’t really know until we take a look inside…

We’re in year three of Activision’s Skylanders franchise. The publisher has released two different entries since 2011, starting with Skylanders: Spyro’s Adventure. Swap Force, the latest title, is due out later this year.

There’s no question that Skylanders has been a mammoth money-maker for Activision. So it should come as no surprise that the company hopes to see its series last for 10 to 20 years.

Vice President of Skylanders business Joshua Taub told Joystiq:

“We have goals of making this a 10 to 20 year franchise that becomes a staple for kids.”

The next Puzzle Quest may have a theme featuring the Marvel franchise.

Superannuation, up to his usual sleuthing ways, has come across the domain name marvelpuzzlequest.com. This is official – Marvel registered the site itself.

We know that a new Puzzle Quest is in the works, and it’s coming this year. Might Marvel Puzzle Quest be that title?

Does anyone remember Mario Kart Arcade GP? It was a weird collaboration between Nintendo and Namco Bandai that never really felt like Mario Kart since it had all kinds of crazy additions like a camera that inserted your face into the game, Pac-Man and Tamagotchi characters and what seemed like a hundred items. I guess it never was considered a Mario Kart game since Nintendo outright ignored it when naming Mario Kart 7. Well anyway, there were only two games in the series but now it looks like Namco Bandai are returning to it with Mario Kart Arcade GP DX.

From early screenshots and information it doesn’t seem like a whole lot has changed in the six years since the last game. The gliding and underwater sections from Mario Kart 7 are making a return, and the game features a track and character from Taiko Drum Master. Hopefully the announcer from the previous games won’t be making another appearance. The game will be on display at the Japan Amusement Expo this month.

Almost all of THQ’s major studios and IPs were purchased during an auction last month. But Vigil Games and Darksiders? They were left behind.

Crytek chief executive officer Cevat Yerli in Germany said that his company was “surprised” by the lack of bids for Vigil.

“We were surprised when nobody bid on Vigil. We would have liked to have bid, but there were too many unknowns.”

Thankfully, Crytek, in a way, stepped in by forming a new USA studio. While it’s technically not Vigil Games, many former staffers have joined the new division including former general manager and co-owner David Adams.

Yerli spoke highly of Adams in an interview with GamesBeat:

“But when nobody bid [on Vigil], I thought that maybe we could reconsider bidding. But eventually we decided not to because the projects [the developer was working on] weren’t strategically fit for us, but I really liked David [when I talked to him] on the phone. He made a very good impression on me as someone who really cared, someone who is really passionate about what he does, and someone who is passionate about the team he works with.”
