Iwata: Project Cafe a new approach to home consoles, difficult to make 3D a key feature

A couple of additional quotes have been picked up from a Nintendo news conference held in Japan earlier today. President Satoru Iwata commented on the console in general, explaining that “We would like to propose a new approach to home video game consoles.”
Iwata also seemed to address the topic of 3D gaming. Although 3D is a very significant element of Nintendo’s latest handheld sensation, it doesn’t sound like Nintendo will be implementing such a feature for Project Cafe. Iwata noted that “It’s difficult to make 3-D images a key feature, because 3-D televisions haven’t obtained wide acceptance yet.” This is something that Nintendo has pointed out previously, so it shouldn’t come as a huge surprise.
Iwata remains quiet on Project Cafe, says “it will offer a new way of playing games within the home”

Despite the large amount of rumors being circulated about Project Cafe, Nintendo has decided to remain quiet about the system. The Big N did confirm that the console is on the way a few hours ago, but did not share many details about what fans can expect. The only information contained in the company’s press release is that the system will be playable at E3 and will launch next year.
So it’s not too surprising that president Satoru Iwata wouldn’t offer any additional news at a press conference earlier today. Iwata only told attendees that we’ll have to wait until E3, though teased that the console “will offers new way of playing games within the home.”
“As for the details of exactly what it will be, we have decided that it is best to let people experience it for themselves at E3. So I won’t talk about specific details today, but it will offer a new way of playing games within the home.”
Nintendo confirms new console, launching next year, playable at E3

It’s been a long time coming, hasn’t it (actually, not really, but it feels like the rumors have been floating around forever)? Just like the 3DS, Nintendo has sent out a brief press release a short while ago confirming that they are working on a new console. The company actually hasn’t confirmed much at all other than the fact that it is launching next year and that it will be playable at E3. I think that’s pretty darn significant! Time to start counting down to E3…
More evidence for the Project Cafe codename rumor

We already told you about the “Cafe” folder on Nintendo’s developers/publishers site, though look what was uncovered on the same domain…
There’s no denying that the “Project Cafe” codename is picking up steam. It definitely sounds like that might be the real deal.
A hint that Project Cafe is the codename for Nintendo’s next console

Update: Nintendo has officially confirmed that they are working on the Wii’s successor. You can check out a couple of details here.
WarioWorld is a website created for developers/publishers working on Nintendo platforms. It’s possible to detect some of the folders that exist on the site, as “wii”, “nitro” and “ctr” all direct you to the homepage. Understandably, bogus names will only lead to a 404 area.
So it’s interesting that “cafe” seems to work. This could be a small indication that Nintendo’s next console is indeed codenamed “Project Cafe.” Because Nitro is accessible, it’s clear that codenames are accepted. It probably would have been more helpful had someone discovered the “cafe” URL prior to the initial rumors, but this is still a very interesting find.
