“Also similar to the US, 2010 has not seen a strong software lineup thus far for the Wii platform, while big titles were launched for other companies’ platforms one after another. In the US, Xbox 360 has been keeping the lead over PS3 this year. In Europe, on the other hand, while Xbox 360 was showing the decline, PS3 has shown increase since the fall of 2009. It appears that the benefit of third party publishers’ big multiplatform titles has been mainly contributing to PS3. On the other hand, the sales of Nintendo DS hardware in Europe are showing a year-on-year decrease, unlike the United States market. While Wii has been embracing big hit titles since the latter half of 2009, not many strong titles to significantly drive hardware sales have been launched for Nintendo DS for a while. So, we recognise that we are coming to the stage where we need to offer a hit title that can gain social phenomena and catch our customers’ attentions.” – Satoru Iwata

To be honest, the Wii and DS have both lacked big titles in 2010 so far. Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Metroid: Other M will change that for Nintendo’s console, though the lack of big titles for both systems in Japan especially has been troublesome.

Nintendo has been relying on the sales of New Super Mario Bros. Wii throughout the first half of the year. The same could be same of Tomodachi Collection, which is really the only first-party title other than Pokemon Ranger that has topped the charts consistently. There have been a few notable third-party games here and there, but lineups for the Wii and DS haven’t looked impressive in 2010 so far. And with the 3DS on the way, Nintendo will have to find a way to balance the development of titles for that portable as well as the DS.

Admit it: You’ve always dreamed of quitting your job and roaming the countryside as a legendary kung fu warrior. Thanks to the new Photo Dojo™ game for the Nintendo DSiWare™ service, your dream is finally within reach. The game features customization options that let you add your entire body and voice to wild kung fu matches. It puts you right into the middle of a hilarious fighting game. Best of all, it’s available for a whopping zero Nintendo DSi Points™ now through June 10. That’s right – ZERO! Don’t wait – 200 Nintendo DSi Points will be required for download starting June 11.

After you download Photo Dojo, be sure to keep an eye out for some of the other big games Nintendo is releasing during the next month. We’re starting off this week with a hand-held version of the classic Earthworm Jim. Not to be overruled, a new Phoenix Wright™ Ace Attorney™ title serves up some justice for the WiiWare™ service.

Update: ONM’s has clarified the situation regarding a second character (thanks Robert!). The review actually states:

“Luigi nonchalantly turns up about 20 stars in and offers his services at random points throughout the game, which is a good thing because it means you don’t have to get all 120 stars to play as him this time. What’s the reward for doing so this time around? Come on, we’re not telling you that!”

So the actual person who typed up details from the review misinterpreted what was written. On the bright side, it does seem like it’ll be worth getting all 120 stars anyway!

This information comes from the Super Mario Galaxy 2 review from the Official Nintendo Magazine…

– Super Mario Galaxy 2 takes place in an alternate reality, Mario and Lumas haven’t met b
– Side-scrolling intro acts as part of a story book, pages continue to turn as you progress
– Big Luma is called Lubba, he owns Starship Mario, transforms a planet into the ship
– Bowser has taken the stars along with Peach which Lubba needs to power the ship
– Lubba says: “Nice spaceship, huh? More like a FACEship!” when he transforms the ship
– Starship Mario technically acts as a small hub where you talk to NPCs and have fun
– Brighter game in some respects, has more color and sunny planets
– More than 40 galaxies
– More of Yoshi in Galaxy 2 than New Super Mario Bros. Wii
– Spring Mario power-up only isn’t used very much at all
– Luigi playable at 20 stars, might have another playable character at 120
– Monkey called “The Chimp” allows you to play mini-games
– More 2D sections
– Galaxy 2 has throwbacks to older Mario titles, game tells you not to go on the Internet and search for them
– Bowser stages comparable to Super Mario 64
