“The Wii U GPU is several generations ahead of the current gen. It allows many things that were not possible on consoles before. If you develop for Wii U you have to take advantage of these possibilities, otherwise your performance is of course limited. Also your engine layout needs to be different. You need to take advantage of the large shared memory of the Wii U, the huge and very fast EDRAM section and the big CPU caches in the cores. Especially the workings of the CPU caches are very important to master. Otherwise you can lose a magnitude of power for cache relevant parts of your code. In the end the Wii U specs fit perfectly together and make a very efficient console when used right.”

– Shin’en’s Manfred Linzner

Shin’en is talking about something I’ve been putting out there for a while now: The Wii U’s architecture is fundamentally different from a PS4, PC, or any other console out there. You can’t use the same “engine layout” (as they put it) and get the results you want, so if you want to get the most out of the console you have to be able to put in the extra effort to make an engine that takes advantage of what its strengths are. This is a huge reason why we aren’t seeing third party, multiplatform support on Wii U, and why we generally haven’t seen it on past Nintendo systems.

New details for Sonic Lost World for Wii U & Nintendo 3DS revealed

29th May 2013 – Following on from last week’s Nintendo Direct video announcement in which details of a worldwide partnership between SEGA & Nintendo were announced, Nintendo of Europe today reveals additional details of the second title to be published exclusively on Wii U and Nintendo 3DS as part of the three title deal. Sonic Lost World sees Sonic face his most powerful enemy to date – and this time there are six of them. Sonic Lost World will be available exclusively for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS later this year.

Dr. Eggman has harnessed the power of six menacing creatures known as the Deadly Six, but when the Deadly Six rise up against their master, Sonic has to unite with his arch nemesis in order to take on the new enemies head-to-head. Using his dynamic new parkour moves and improved Colour Powers, Sonic must run, jump and race through a variety of ever changing terrains in order to defeat the Deadly Six.

E3 2013 may finally be where we are given a first look at Retro Studios’ Wii U game. Nothing is guaranteed, but Nintendo’s Hiro Yamada did tease last month that he “hope[s] to introduce it to you in the not so distant future.”

As far as what Retro is working on, that’s pretty much anyone’s guess. However, IGN’s Peer Schneider did offer up potential insight during a Nintendo Voice Chat” feature (24:17 mark).

He said, “I’ve heard rumors that Retro’s game is a new brand.”

This seems to imply that Retro is working on a new IP, but nothing is set in stone, and the wording is slightly nebulous. Here’s hoping that Nintendo will finally pull back the curtain on the company’s project next month.
